Rather Breaks 63-Day Boycott
RATHER: There is news tonight worthy of national note in the case of missing person 24-year-old intern Chandra Levy. The young woman disappeared in Washington more than 11 weeks ago and became one of tens of thousands of missing persons across the country. CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart reports on both the status and nature of this widely publicized investigation have changed. STEWART: Washington's summer-long search for a missing former intern has finally reached a critical junction. Earlier this week, the FBI officially transferred the Chandra Levy investigation to its Cold Case unit, which historically has handled only the toughest of cases which have few clues. [Rest of story] RATHER: You may want to keep in mind the case remains officially a "missing person" case. No crime has been established, no one has been accused by lawmen--of anything, much less formally charged. No one's been charged with breaking any laws. --Dan Rather and Jim Stewart on the CBS Evening News, July 18, 2001.
"...some people--including many who are partisan political operatives--concentrated not on the key questions the overall story raised but on the documents that were part of the support of the story."
This is the comment I found to be the most astounding. In essence, Rather is saying that forged documents have raised key questions and we should all concentrate on the "substance" that was made up out of whole cloth. If the documents are forgeries, and I believe that they are, there is no substance on which to focus. There is NO STORY if the "support" for the story is bogus.
I was watching FOX this morning and they reported CBS's assertion the documents were real with no further comment. To the casual viewer it looked as though they accepted CBS's claim and therefore one could only conclude the documents are real.
If CBS is going to be held accountable for this, it will have to be taken to another level. The media won't inspect this in any detail. Like FOX, they will report CBS's denial and move on.
Dallas Morning News is reporting that a study they did many years ago showed that the "sugar coating" Lt. Col. had retired a year before the memo was written.
The truth is getting out.
How many journalistic black eyes can an anchorman have?
And why were copies of the memos satisfactory for CBS? When you could get so much more info by testing the originals?
Note to CBS: If they wouldn't have over the originals that should've told you all something.
Your refusal to insist, then still running with the story, sure told me plenty. As has your net's subsequent behavior.
