U.S. calls for diplomacy with Chechens(State Department)

WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.

The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

Get rid of Colon Bowel and all those lib-dem Klintoon trash hiding out in that State Dept swamp, and drain it.

What don't the Foggy Bottom Skunks remember about The Slaughter at Beslan, just a few days ago?

Negotiate a political settlement? BS. Kill the terrorists, Vlad, and level Chechnya. Well heck, you know what to do.

As usual, the AP headline does not match the actual

The only diplomacy the islamanazi understands is a bullet. Bonus points awarded if it is dipped in pig blood first.

President Bush is mistaken. There is no diplomacy which can deal with child murderers. The murderous scum terrorists were orded to kill the children by the leader of the Chenyan 'rebels'. Really, this enlightened policy has been a total flop in Iraq. The Islamacists hide in Mosques and kill American soldiers. They peceive us as weak and are paying us back in blood-the blood of American soldiers as well as other innocents. We ought to go after the terrorists with a vengeance. The only way to bring peace in Iraq or Chechnya for that matter is to kill the Islamic terrorists. I believe unless President Bush realizes that we have a war in Iraq and wages it mightily, he may very well lose this election. It is all very well to talk about Iraq as if it is stabalizing, but it's not. This is the truth. If we had been as sensitve in Germany, we would have lost the peace in the 1940's.

Sounds like to me the State Dept. is letting the Russians know in a diplomatic way that if the Russians want our support, it better be a two way street.

Right! This is a game of Chess transposed over Risk, with Poker cards instead of dice. Before we let AP spin rattle our feathers, let us take a breath and consider the possibilities. Our stratgeic decisions have been sound to date, so let's presume a tactical incentive here, before flinging our spears at shadows.

Well, if I attributed any brains at all to State, I'd translate that as us saying to the Chechens, "Uh, boys, y'all better jettison any of those Islamic nutburgers...NOW...before we back off and let Vlad turn Chechnya into the parking lot for the first Wal-Mart in North Ossetia, y'hear?"

But since this is State we're talking about, I just assume that it's a bunch of Brooks-Brothers-wearing out-of-touch professional diplomats doing what they do best...sending mixed signals and getting the current Administration (Democrat or Republican, but mainly Republican) in trouble.

No Putin has not been oppressing the Chechnyans. They were given a great deal of autonomy. Putin was forced to step in again because they were murdering Christians and other non-Muslims. These people are not victims. They are agressors bent on genocide.

Dear George,

Why the heck is it that every time I decide to vote for you, you or your minions try really hard to make me change my mind?

This is absurd. Leave the poor Russians alone, they have enough to deal with right now without this misguided BS.

"The Russians should pound them back into the stone age! "

Have ya seen Chechnya lately? The Russians have been pounding them for 10 years now.

Putin did not start this. He may have made it worse, but I can't blame Putin for meeting an Islamic rebellion with force. If the Mexicans infiltrating the Southwest US were to rise up with arms against American authorities, I'd expect no less. And in that case, I'd also think it absurd to talk about diplomacy.

Unless the diplomacy consists of demanding all known terrorists and al queda advisors are immediately identified or turned over dead or alive I say Putin, do whatever you feel is necessary

"Putin's government has been truely oppressing the Chechnian's. I don't blame Putin one bit for his comments, but Putin has brought this on. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."

True. If I'm some Chechnian father/mother who watched their family -- innocent bystanders -- blown to bits by the Russian military, it'd be difficult to keep me from becoming a 'freedom fighter'.

But killing children ain't the answer either.

Methinks we're all doomed.

so let's presume a tactical incentive here, before flinging our spears at shadows.

Based on the responses so far, this thread looks like the movie trailer from the new movie "Hero" with the scene of the thousands of arrows flying at the guy on the roof.

This place was not as knee jerk at one time

Exactly, Putin should tell Chechnya turn over the terrorists immediately as we did to the Taliban. They either turn them over or take the consequences.

The US is aligning with the frogs. At least the circus of luring Russia in Iraq is over. The Russians are against the wall. They might very well blow it up. Fits the bill. What a mess.

BTW, Chechnya should not be even mentioned here. It was an international attack.

When one watches news reports that show bloodied children who were shot in the back, starved, raped, bayoneted and tortured one tends to lose one's nuanced approach.

I highly doubt that President Bush agrees with what the State Department did. Our great President is always saying and continues to say to this day that you cannot reason with or negotiate with these people. This smells like a Colin Powell deal to me. My guess is that Putin will receive a private phone call from the President telling him to go after them.

President Bush should not allow State to speak for him. He should tell them to stfu. We don't need to send mixed signals. That being said, I hope you are correct.
