Putin did not start this. He may have made it worse, but I can't blame Putin for meeting an Islamic rebellion with force. If the Mexicans infiltrating the Southwest US were to rise up with arms against American authorities, I'd expect no less. And in that case, I'd also think it absurd to talk about diplomacy.
