It was the Zell Yell! :-)
Zell Miller has seen the party that he once loved abandon the core American values that FDR, Truman, and JFK defended. He had every right to be p'o'd, and to tell them to their faces.
Who's idea was it to put MSNBC outside with the freakshow? Scarborough did a good job of telling them not to be stupid about the troops...
It's true....I tell everyone "it's relatively easy to be a Southern WASP conservative down here"
out of my peers in business, I'd wager 90-95% vote (R).
my extended family between here and Mississippi and North Carolina and Texas and New Mexico and Michigan numbering over 100 or so all vote (R) except for one who is a bleary eyed student at Tulane and another is in film school in LA and one cousin is a judge in SF (he's a red...a watermelon)
thinking of NYC at election time reminds me of my duels at Colombia and Barnard faculty get togethers in the 80s....when they heard my Southron accent, the firewroks would begin....the crucible of my transformation from the left actually (25 years ago or so)...my then love was a professorettte at Barnard.
Interesting analogy. On the mark. I remember when my grandfather raides his voice. It was VERY rare. Everyone payed attention. Even the clocks stopped ticking.
Zell is mad...at the party he's been a party of all his life. SO WHAT. GROW A PAIR!
A performance piece by TheBigB. Thank you. :)
I'm coming late to the party here tonight, but the consensus of the worry about Miller's speech is that he was impassioned and angry. Old fashioned stem-winder speech, fire and brimstone...according to the spokesman from National Review. Well, maybe Zell Miller listened to the news today about Russia and terrorists seizing a school and holding hundreds of children and teachers hostage, threatening to kill fifty kids or twenty at a time. My first reaction on hearing that was sheer rage. A heartbeat later I was thinking, My God, they could do that here without much trouble...and I got even angrier. Maybe that's what fueled Zell Miller's rage. Here we are in the grip of a terrible war where the enemy is already among us, and PC crap rammed down our throat is choking our ability to defend this nation. Dropping the worst of the charges against those three terrorists today...now we can only get them on mail fraud if you please...because something about the way we prosecuted them isn't perfect. Hello! We're at war. That's the reality. This isn't cops and robbers time. The enemy isn't playing by the same rules here, and the RATs insisting that we pretend they simply plan to rob the corner Quickie-Mart is ludicrous and will get thousands of us killed. That should make the entire country mad as hell.
Finally Zell Miller gets up on his hind legs and calls a spade a spade and some people think he's not nice? They should get a grip. If Ronald Reagan, bless his soul, were alive and well today and spoke out about the war on terror, he'd castigate RATs, too. We're living through a nightmare, and what's going on in Russia tonight should be a wakeup call to the entire US.
You know, about the "zell too angry" thing...
The "talking heads" and those of us who are really really tuned into politics have a very different perspective about these types of thing than the run of hte mill populace.
Just as the twins silliness last night reached a certain group of people effectively (though regarded as somewhat "improper" by certain others) Zell's speech will reach a certain group, and a very important one at that. That group may well leave the Demodog party permanently after Zell's speech tonight. Others may scoff, but they will not outweigh those who agree with Zell.

My favorite Uncle and 4 cousins live there too. Y'all be careful.
"There are a lot of very conservative people in the Midwest who pull the RAT lever each election out of habit. "Having a sitting Democrat Senator tell them that their party cannot be trusted to defend the country and that he is now supporting Bush will make a difference with some of the people."
That's right. And a very subtle speech, delivered ever so prettily and pleasingly for the media types and the New Yorkers, would not have jolted a single one of those Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania or Iowa voters out of their complacency! But Zell's fire and obvious concern for the safety of his family will play doggone well in those places. Those people aren't going to worry about whether he 'looked angry' or not.
2963..Great post!

I am sympathetic that living in Manhattan especially the upper west side would be tuff on one's spirit in a presumably close race.
I imagine Madison, Berkley, Ann Arbour, Bennington, New Paltz, Eugene, and yes even Chapel Hill etc could wear on ya just the same.
I swear to folks that out here in the veldt that W has bigger support than 4 years ago.
Even CT is in play as we discussed last night....that is no insignificant stat. If the election were today, W would rout Kerry.
But....we have to stay the course and maintain speed.
Not many orator's of Zell's delivery left you know.
I think Zell Miller is the last honest Dem.
A true Dem of the old school.
Those days are over.
Thank you, Zell, for reminding me what it used to be like.
That world's gone now, but thanks for being the honest man you are.
Hey Mack! In NY maybe they like pate and brie, but out here in flyover country (WI, PA, OH, FL, etc.) we like our meat red. We say grace and we say ma'am and if you ain't into that then we don't give a damn. This is the stuff that Reagan dems LOVE!
I agree mostly but it might help New Hampshire and Southern Kali and eastern Wash and OR.
IF the President wins re-election, the House is held, and control of the Senate is expanded, so that the Dems perhaps actually become so demoralized that they have to jettison some of the current leadership, do you think Zell will work to reshape the Dems towards a more middle course, or just fade into the background? Enough of a redirection to attract over some econ conserv/social libertine/medical safety net moderate Republicans? Or will the Obama's just move up and put a new face on the same charade?
Read THIS and then tell me again how mad we should be:
Federal agents have arrested a Des Plaines, Illinois man as a deep-cover Iraqi spy living undercover in the US for eleven years, awaiting orders from his IIS handler that apparently never came.
and in all fairness, I must confess that there are zones of Nashville like the Vandy area that are just as bad for our politics as say....the NYU environs.
Slackers all.
