Bush Offers To Help McCain Fight Ads
KXAN ^ | August 26, 2004 | AP

Las Cruces, N.M. -- Senator John McCain says he's "very appreciative" of a White House offer to help pursue court action against outside political ad groups.

The Arizona Republican has prodded President Bush to condemn ads from a group calling itself "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth." The group has attacked John Kerry's Vietnam record, saying he doesn't deserve his medals and shouldn't be commander-in-chief.

McCain tells The Associated Press he doesn't want the independent political groups "abolished." He says they should just "live under the same campaign finance restrictions" as other groups.

Bush called McCain from aboard Air Force One today while on his way to New Mexico. A Bush spokesman says the men spoke about the issue.

The spokesman says Bush will support McCain in court action against the ads or if that fails, work toward a legislative solution.

Well I agree with you there. I realize in a perfect world where the court did what it is supposed to do.

Something wrong about asking all groups to play under the same rules?

Once again, Bush violates his oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Q That includes the Swift Boats --

A: Well, for one, that includes MOVEON.ORG. You are all aware by now that MOVEON.ORG has spent millions of dollars and aired several ads bashing President Bush. MOVEON.ORG had a couple of ads comparing President Bush to hitler.

Q You don't want to say "Swift Boat," is that the --

WOW... the vein in your forehead is popping out! Creepy. But anyway... YOU won't say MOVEON.ORG. Try it... M-O-V-E-O-N-.-O-R-G. It's easy. By now you are all aware that MOVEON.ORG has spent millions of dollars and aired several ads bashing President Bush. MOVEON.ORG had a couple of ads comparing President Bush to hitler.

Q Are the Swift Boats a shadowy group?

One that comes to mind is MOVEON.ORG. By now you are all aware that MOVEON.ORG has spent millions of dollars and aired several ads bashing President Bush. MOVEON.ORG had a couple of ads comparing President Bush to hitler. Michael Moore is another, though he can't help cast a large shadow.

Sheesh, does everyone have to run around and scream like chicken littles everytime they hear something they don't expect?

Do the math. Last I heard the anti-Bush groups had raised more than $170 million, the anti-Kerry groups around $35 million. If the legal action President Bush is suggesting works, BOTH sides will be shut down. Since the anti-Bush groups have much more than $35 million left to spend, and there is still time for the SBVFT ads to run before a new ruling comes down, blocking all 527's will hurt the Dems more than the GOP. The SBVFT group just needs to decide how to time the release of their most damaging info, and make sure they have a backup outlet(prominent Senator, prosecutor, rare conservative journalist) for their big info in case the FEC shuts down their ads. If they truly are still holding back one or more blockbusters, it will now stand on its own if released via those other outlets.

He says they should just "live under the same campaign finance restrictions" as other groups.

IOW, they should cease to run ads 60 days before the election. That's just peachy. It would leave only the two campaigns and the media to run stuff. How cozy.

My enthusiasm for Bush's re-election effort just dropped by about 50%.

We were wrong about CFR. I think the 527's are better than the Parties raising all of the soft money. And No money is filtered OUT of the Process, except Corporate, and Union money, in the 60 day window.

The only thing I object to, and it has always been a problem even before CFR, was the way that regulations keep an individual from just doing as he pleases.

I agree. I know this is all a bunch of bluster, but it would have been great if every time they mentioned Swift Boat, he shot back with Moveon.org.

Thanks for the link to Justice Scalia's opinion on the CFR.
Same sentiment in WSJ today where they asked why the President signed the legislation on campaign financing.

I think we agree that that was a big mistake, and maybe worse than that. But regarding the call to McCain I think (well at least hope) that it puts both McCain and Kerry on the spot.

"Yes, I support free speech. I trust people to make up their own minds."

So, it doesn't matter if they lie through their teeth. This is "free speech"?

"Do you believe Soros? Do you think Bush is like Hitler? Are you smarter than everyone else?"

No, no, and most certainly, no.

Explain to me how buying TV ads is free speech compared to voicing your opinion on a street corner?

The TV is the 20th century equivilent of a soap box.

Or how giving a group 15 million is free speech?

It has already been ruled on that money used to support politics or ideas is speech as defined by the 1st amendment. It was a correct decision. If I can't give my money to have my voice heard, I have no voice.

Sure it is. And yes it matters. The courts can be used to address slander and libel. And people can ascertain for themselves the veracity of statements made by others.

No, no, and most certainly, no.

YOU make my point. I rest my case.
