To all on this thread: Both planes left from Moscow. Both would have fueled up there. Fuel contamination? That could bring down two planes around the same time. I'm just throwing it out there, even though we know what is going on here.

I just personally find it misleading and misinformative to declare that a certain explaination is the only possibility when it's such an inflammatory topic.

As I said, I understand your point. But this is an internet forum, not a newsroom or TV news studio. Forums such as these actually help people release tension and worry precisely because they can express their concerns -- whether it be through wild speculation or more sober discussion, the conversation is what's important. You've just contradicted yourself. Since having lost the transponder signal, that plane could have travelled a good long distance from its last known position. In that time, it may have crashed, it may have made an emergency landing, it may have exploded, or it may be flying in an area and/or at an altitude where the Russians can't see it. I should hope that they have military planes in the air locating the missing plane. Assuming that this plane existed in the first place, there are still a number of possible reasons for the transponder and radar signature to have disappeared - terrorism notwithstanding.

My hope remains that the first plane went down as the result of an unfortunate mechanical failure and that the second plane either never existed or is perfectly fine (which would point to gross incompetence on the part of some Russian air traffic controllers).

Although it is possible it is not terrorism, I would bet that it is terror related.

Look at a map of Europe. Those planes can go 2000-2400 miles - that puts most of Europe within range of Moscow.

My guess is the Russian military realized what was going on and took the planes down. That's what the US would do if a 9-11 type scenario started to unfold here again - at least that's what I THINK they would do.

Checking the Arabic message boards now to see what they are saying about it.

By the way, there was a bus stop bombing this morning in Moscow as well.
