NYC Welcomes GOP with 'Kill the President' Play

In advance of the GOP convention at the end of this month, New York City is being plastered with stickers that read, "I'm Gonna Kill the President" - supposedly an advertisement for a new off-Broadway play staged by the anti-war protest group United for Peace and Justice.

"It's the name of a new comedy to run in the East Village during the Republican Convention," WABC Radio's George Weber reported Tuesday morning.

Weber called the box office to find out what could be funny about the murder of an American president, and got this recorded response:

"Howdy," chirped a spokesman. "You've reached the information and instruction hotline for, 'I'm Gonna Kill the President - a Federal Offense."

The unidentified voice goes on to explain that that the play is the story of a young man's plot to kidnap the president in hopes of sparking a revolution that installs a puppet Democracy - featuring real puppets.

The play also includes an audience participation segment where theater-goers are supposed to crank call the White House to demand that President Bush end the war in Iraq.

"If you're some kind of law enforcement agent or official, hang up now," the information hotline concludes. "There's nothing illegal happening here. Just some old-fashioned, constitutionally sanctioned fun."

After Weber's report, WABC's "Curtis & Kuby Show" was deluged with callers outraged over the radical thespian stunt.

Even Communist lawyer-turned-commentator Ron Kuby sounded irked, explaining, "Generally speaking, you cannot directly threaten the president's life." While the play might be "on proper side of the first amendment," he said, "it's not by much."

The play opened last Fall. I understand how someone would be offended, but the article neglects to point out that it's a satire.

There are some things that aren't funny any more.

Flying an airplane into a building? That was a real thigh-slapper on 9/10/01...but not anymore.

From what I've read, the play was never funny.

I'm saying its not parody. It's pure hatred by "civil" Kerry supporters. You can call a pig a horse until your face turns blue, but that won't make the pig into a real horse.

Satire is supposed to be funny. If the play was never funny, then it isn't satire; it's sedition.

I know... I live in NYC, although not in Manhattan. I do, however, work in The People's Republic of Park Slope.
We need ProtestWarrior or something similar on that block before the showtimes.

So you want to start legislating humor? ("I'm sorry son, this thing you wrote that people were laughing at is, in the Government's opinion, not funny. So i'm going to have to place you under arrest.")

Great.

The behaviour of the Rats during this election reminds me more and more of the supporters of McGovern and Mondale.

I was pretty active even then, and I believe this is worse, much worse. And remember, there are still nearly three months to go! Very horrible things may happen.

I lived in PS myself years ago, Third Street between 5th and 6th. This was long before it was what it is. My family roots wind through there (1920s) My little brother, a Desert Storm USMC combat vet and up close GZ witness, lived there in 2001. He was getting a bit freaked by the burning smells in the air in the days immediately following, unpleasant memories.

We couldn't reach him by phone so I side-streeted my way down Atlantic Ave. and hit the chi-chi bars along Fifth looking for him. I caught up to him in some Euro-trash joint. He was about two minutes away from tearing the place up (he's been known to do that). The "artsy" crowd was caught up in a big "It's America's fault" circle jerk. I wanted start throwing with him and turn the place into the OK Corral, but dammit, I promised mom I'd find him and make sure he was ok. There was a fair bit of shoving and finger in the chest stuff as we got ready to leave though and we came this close. It was fun, considering.

These ads are clearly threatening to the Presidency, and thus, illegal.

But worse, these ads could be intended as subliminal advertising to condition the population for "unexpected" developments.

"They Live" was not altogether fictional.

"I say let them keep shooting themselves in the foot."

I agree. I know democrats who are becoming increasingly embarrassed by the lunatic left. Several have already stated they are not going to vote in the coming election because of it.

I know the feeling about the slope. I work for New York Methodist Hospital. I've been in some of those bars, but I like the Carriage House the best! I was wearing a Naval Academy sweatshirt on my way to a bagel place one morning, (I used to live here too...) and I was hassled on the street by some stinky hippie woman who called me a warmonger. I just smiled, waved, and said, "Good Morning, Ma'am!" She stood there expecting a knuckle dragging, obscene response, I guess.

My wife & I live between 35th Ave. & Fort Totten. I used to work in Great Neck, though, at a music Store near the Post Office. Small World!

I'm sure they didn't bother to interview the clubs in Boston last month...

How can you watch that show? I was tuned in last night for about 5 minutes and it turned my stomach. John was bitter and nauseating -- I thought it was a video segment of Air America.

He started by gushing about the "war hero" and all his medals and then said sarcastically, "Well, we can't have that, can we?"

Then Clinton came on so they could shake their heads at Republican's dirty tricks (like how Bush and the Republicans are exploiting those poor misguided swiftboat vets)

It's kinda hard to understand John when he's choking on Clinton's naughty bits though....

I think so too .. Bill Sammon said in his interview with Rush that "when you start advocating the assassination of a sitting President, you've gone beyond the bounds of reasonable political discourse".

Even as angry and disgusted as the repubs were by x42's actions .. I don't recall any blatant talk about killing the president.

The fact the democrats are not embarrassed and ashamed of this activity .. says a great deal about them. They think this is a game .. a joke .. you say what you have to say to GET WHAT YOU WANT .. POWER!!!

This is a perfect excuse, just say that it is deemed a public threat and you will have an excuse to stop protesters from getting near the GOP convention! These people have NO RIGHT to protest!
