how dare a poseur like kerry drag lincoln's second inaugural, perhaps the greatest speech ever written in the english language, into his smarmy campaign. Find attached the relevant passage from the 2nd inaugural. It needs no introductory. A link for the entire text follows.

Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has his own purposes. "Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!" If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a Living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope--fervently do we pray--that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether"

This is inappropriate on a grand scale. Full text here

If it weren't for Lewsinksy and the aftermath, he would trounce Bush. But it did all happen, and Americans in their gut want to move on. Gore sensed that as well.

You're right. I was typing as I heard the results get reported.

Luntz closed saying Kerry didn't get as big a swing as Gore did in 2000, btw.

And I do know our time is coming.

I would say he showed a lot of energy, but I wouldn't call it a home run. The lines about homeless people and hair pollution in Harlem just won't resonate outside of the crowd at Fleet Center.

This said, I think we should act as if Kerry COULD win, and fight with every muscle and neuron...

I swear that humor and straight talk are our best weapons. As for humor, think of every (non-political) commercial that sticks in your mind. They're *all* funny:

- Wendy's - Soviet fashion show
- Wendy's - Where's the beef?
- Bud - Whazzzup? (especially the Japanese restaurant version)
- FedEx - "We're all DOOMED!!"

- And, oh, only every Super Bowl ad that gets run every year -- and each thity-second spot costs A MILLION BUCKS.

Humor, friends. Humor mixed with political message.

Kerry delivered a good speech. It doesn't appeal to me for obvious reasons, but he'll get a bump out of it. They sure took lessons from Pubbies on how to do acceptance speeches and run a convention.

Time to get to work and twist 'em into the ground.

"By the way, I consider the attack on the President's faith the lowest of the low. I think I will send another donation to Bush/Cheney tomorrow."

Thats a sound suggestion. I think we all should send a donation, even if only a modest amount.

CeCe Connolly just said it's interesting the extent to which Kerry adopted Republican themes: Patriotism, optimism and faith.

Interesting, Americans are suicidal?

Barone's prescient. There's nothing original about this guy except his being a vessel for those who hate Bush. In 46 minutes he contributed nothing to showing why he deserves to be elected President. This is one of those that won't take. Trust me, if John F*ckin' does get a bounce out of this convention it will be evaporate in a matter of days. As for the content of the speech, there's nothing in it that registers as presidential.

True. I think he's going to pick up some independents with the salute and pro-military tone, but lose some lefties, resulting in no net gain.

i>Sorry to be a snot, but this is a very good speech. The line "the future doesn't belong to fear, the future belongs to freedom" was excellent.

Hi brand newbie, welcome to Free Republic. How many Republicans or even independents will be swayed by those words when Kerry has to face up to his 'look at his record' portion of the speech.

I can just see it now. Kerry's own voice saying look at my record, then every flip flop vote; every baby killing, homosexual worshiping, military bashing word that he has ever been recorded saying following it in an ad.

How's that for honesty and truth in an election.

Stick around, wisconsinbushvolunteer. Maybe you'll learn something here you can use 'to help' President Bush in Wisconsin.

Alexandra is now claiming it was a conservative dress, but failed to withstand 3500 flashbulbs! These Kerrys. Show up for photo ops and are surprised there are cameras. (So, why no underwear?)

"CeCe Connolly just said it's interesting the extent to which Kerry adopted Republican themes: Patriotism, optimism and faith."

Too bad they are only words to him...stolen words at that.

Becasue he either doesn't have or doesn't believe in any of them.
