but also other news on May 7, 2004, that I don't remember reading about.

Ukraine Seizes 375 Pounds of Radioactive Material, AP Reports

May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Ukrainian security officers arrested three men and seized almost 375 pounds (170 kilograms) of cesium- 137, a potential ingredient in a radioactive ``dirty bomb,'' the Associated Press said, citing police spokesman Yuriy Kondratyev.

The material, found in vacuum tubes and some batteries, explodes on contact with water and can cause blood diseases, sterility and birth defects in humans, AP said. A dirty bomb would combine the cesium with a conventional explosive to spread radioactive contamination over a large area.

Two buyers from Kiev were prepared to pay an estimated $60,000 for each of two containers of the material, AP said. Security officials, acting on a tip, yesterday arrested three men from Simferopol on the Crimean peninsula and detained an undisclosed number of other people across the country.

In February, border guards stopped a man trying to take almost 450 grams (1 pound) of uranium into Hungary. Western nations and the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency have warned that Ukraine and other former Soviet republics have become centers of the black market in radioactive materials.

STUART, Fla. (AP) — A train carrying rocks derailed on its way to New Smyrna Beach, closing a route between Jacksonville and Miami.

No one was injured when 31 cars of the 180-car train derailed just after 11 p.m. Saturday. The train had left Hialeah and was en route north to New Smyrna Beach and Jacksonville.

The cars that derailed each contained 100 tons of rock used in everything from concrete to road construction, and were in the middle of the train, said Husein Cumber, spokesman for Florida East Coast Railway.

The FEC rail line from Jacksonville to Miami was closed beginning late Saturday and was expected to open by Monday, Cumber said.

The accident is under investigation.

EOM mentions Severnaya in a January 2004 message. In Feb. 2001 two Russian citizans and an Azerbaijani citizen were convicted by a Russian court for traffiking illegal radioactive materials to Turkey from that area.

Severnaya is active with traffic of radioactive materials. I found it a strange coincidence that on the same day in May 2004 as the huge arms depot explosion that closed the regional highway, these fellows were caught with the cesium. Thanks for your explanation.

FORMER Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein spends his time in prison gardening, writing poetry and snacking on American muffins and cookies, Britain's Guardian newspaper reported today.

The paper said the "intriguing glimpse of the former dictator's daily routine as he awaits trial on charges of war crimes and genocide was given... by Iraq's human rights minister, Bakhtiar Amin, who visited Saddam in detention on Saturday".

"One of the poems is about George Bush, but I had no time to read it," he told the Guardian, without making it clear whether he was referring to the incumbent US president, or his father.

"Like the other high-value detainees, Saddam's day begins with a substantial breakfast, an MRE (meal ready to eat), which provides 1300 calories. He also gets hot food twice a day, which could consist of rice or potato and broccoli, along with either fish, beef or chicken.

"For dessert, there might be oranges, apples, pears or plums, but the former leader has developed a penchant for American snacks such as muffins and cookies."

Boston, July 25, 4 pm -- Half-an-hour ago, around 3:30 pm, plainclothes Secret Service pulled a Mid-Eastern looking fellow out from the permitted demonstration as around 1,000 antiwar protesters marched past a check-point, and arrested him.

A crowd of around 25 people followed the police through an alleyway that opened onto a large mall, where the "detained" person sat on a stairway hands cuffed behind his back, surrounded by police.

While the crowd chanted, "This is racial profiling" and "let him go", a lawyer for the demonstration, John Pavos, arrived, but was not afforded much time and no privacy to talk with the arrestee. The police maintained at first that he was not under arrest, but that if he'd allow them to take his picture they'd run in through their computers and let him go. He allowed them to take his picture. A few minutes later the police decided not to let him go.

What was the crime? Police spokespeople say he was arrested for walking past a checkpoint and looking around "a little too curiously." The fact that we were ALL looking around curiously at the enormous fencings surrounding the Fleet Center where the Democratic National Convention begins tomorrow did not seem to matter to the police, who were clearly under orders from federal officials. The person -- who to me appeared like any Graduate Student at the New School in NY -- was detained solely because of his Middle-Eastern appearance, male and bearded.

He was taken to a nearby police center to be questioned by the Secret Service. A reporter for Binghamton IndyMedia recorded the whole thing on camcorder, and will shortly be up on the web.

IMHO, it should be required reading for TMers as it provides details about how Arafat's power was originally established, the first highjacking plans were hatched back in the 1960's, and how the current terrorist organizations are backed.
