"the master of the ship apparently became agitated that the process was taking so long and blurted out that he had a bomb on board. He quickly withdrew the claim, but, according to one official, "It was too late — he had already rung the bell."

LOL...too late.

For the Delawaare Bay and Philly, the pilot goes aboard at the entrance to the bay, where it meets the ocean. We had the Pilot's office buiding and pilot boats next door to our condo in Lewes, DE.

>Excuse my ignorance of nautical terms - what is the difference between ship's master & captain?

In older, former nautical terms, Captain was the Senior Sailor aboard, his word was law, all decisions were final, etc.

The Master was the owner or the owner's representative aboard, the guy who looked out for the business end of the ship, etc. He could request things of the Captain, and fire him if necessary, but until fired, Captain's word was law.

These days, however, terms Captain and Master are used sunomimously

DoD doesn't track every commercial vessel.

Turkish ships do get particular interest, however.

Posted by VRWCTexan on another thread:

From website turks.us Saturday, July 26 2003 @ 10:16 AM Central Daylight Time

Brussels, BELGIUM, July 26, 2003 - Following the Erika and Prestige tanker disasters, the European Union (EU) yesterday issued another warning to member and candidate countries to obey regulations.

Turkey is first on the European Union's black list of high risk cargo vessels. Of 112 ships, 36 Turkish were found to be first in the 'very high risk' class.

In a statement made by the EU when the Erika I statutes went into effect on July 22, if any of the sea transportation vehicles on the list do not comply with regulations and registers another offence, entry and exit to European ports will be prohibited.

The list consists of three risk groups: middle, high and very high. All 36 Turkish ships were found to be in the very high risk group. Observers in Brussels say that Turkey can increase the security of its sea fleet in a very short time by adhering to EU regulations. If Turkey does not comply, it is warned that Turkish seamanship could suffer serious consequences.

Thanks - I knew it rang a bell. The port of Jacksonville was briefly closed down yesterday, so I think there is definitely an effort being made to get something/someone in by sea.

"Just heard on the news, captain says he was joking. What an idiot!?

Correct!

"Joking" is a federal offense in an airport. Wouldn't it be the same on water?

It should be. There are many things to joke about, but blowing up the east coast is not one of them.

What's the concensus here on FR?
1/ There is a bomb or WMD aboard; gov't keeping it quiet?
2/ A dry run for the terrorists?
3/ One or more incredibly stupid people (Captain, etc.)?
4/ ....... ( Your suggestion here )?

There are many things to joke about, but blowing up the east coast is not one of them.

What's "joking" got to do with it?

The only "joke" I see in this whole episode is the sudden conclusion that "it was just a joke".

The known facts are mutually exclusive. Let's not swallow doublethink whole, it's not good for the innards.

What do we know?

1. We know that they were tracking the ship for some time prior to its arrival (presumably since its departure), because it was alleged to have "a bomb" on board (now revised to "a vessel of interest", as of Fox News, literally as I type this).

2. We know attempted to board the ship because the captain said it had "a bomb" on board, and he (the captain) refused to voluntariy allow them to inspect the ship.

3. We know that the ship was ordered out to sea because of the above.

4. We know that the captain later revised his "a bomb" statment to "a joke". Well, I guess we don't really know that. We do know that it's what we were told he said, though. And that's where the official story stopped, and became the standard, "Y'all c'n go home now, folks, nothing to see here, move along now, no story, no bomb, no terrorism, don't be silly, it's just a joke, so don't PANIC!!!, OK?"

And now, here's the biggie:

5. We know that item #4 is mutually exclusive with item #1.

And that's all we really need to know, in order to realize that this story -- as offically wrapped-up -- fails the smell test.
