KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For most little boys, circumcision is a decision for the parents to make. But the Missouri Supreme Court may make that decision for one local boy because his parents don't agree.
Two-and-a-half-year-old Ethan Azar's mother does not want to have him circumcised.
"There's no medical society in the world that recommends it, including the American Academy of Pediatrics," said Camille Azar.
But Ethan's father was recently granted sole custody. He wants his son circumcised. While the boy's father and his attorney would not appear on camera, they did cite personal, social and health reasons for wanting the circumcision, KMBC's Kelly Eckerman reported.
Circumcision removes the layer of skin covering the penis. It is something more and more parents are opting not to do, Eckerman said. The medical community calls it a personal decision.
"Everyone has their bias. But we try to base recommendations on sound medical evidence and it just isn't there to say yes or no," Dr. Ken Wible said.
Lower courts refused to intervene, so the case is now going to the Missouri Supreme Court to see if Ethan's father should be able to go ahead with the circumcision.
"The fact the courts have ruled he can make medical decisions doesn't mean he can make a decision to have part of the healthy living flesh of the child cut off," said Dennis Owens, Camille Azar's attorney.
Doctors did tell KMBC that Ethan's age is a factor.
"At that age, a child is going to need anesthesia," Wible said.
Camille Azar said that the decision should be up to her son when he's older.
"I want Ethan to make the decision about his own body," Camille Azar said.
Eckerman said that religion plays a role in some families' decisions about circumcision, but that has not been an issue here. The battle over Ethan's circumcision comes in the middle of a custody battle. A decision from the state's high court is expected within two weeks.

ROTFLMAO!! I've heard it called many different things, but that's a new one. Thanks for the laugh!!
"But hey, if you wish to permit your children to make this or any other decision, I won't object."
I only wish I had that choice.
There is the issue of circumcision, and there is the issue of a father with sole custody having a legal right to make medical decisions for the child. I'm not debating the circumcision matter.
If a mother had sole custody, and wanted to get a two year old daughter's ears pierced, do you think this matter would be before a state supreme court?
It sounds to me like the case has been dragging out since the boy was an infant.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...
Wanna back that up with something other than your say-so?
smeg·ma n. - A sebaceous secretion, especially the cheesy secretion that collects under the prepuce
Maybe the women on the forum could comment on the impact of the sebaceous cheesy secretion issue in the less than fastidious oral requesters.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness, and this applies equally to males and females.
A guy should be clean whether he's cut or not.
Sorry but it's a power play (even if unconciously). When parents fight the kids always lose. Should this go to the courts? No, but both need to decide what's best for the child. Having custody doesn't mean the other is a bad parent. A mother that had a 2 y/o's ears pierced (which I also think is wrong) should discuss it with the father first.
Could be. When my son was a day old he was circumcised. I stayed with him as the doctor did it. He didn't flinch or cry, (the pro foreskinners claim that is due to the severe shock). He sure seemed normal to be in shock to me. Anyway 2.5 years is gonna be a differnt story. Just putting shoes on that little fella probably requires a shot or two either for him or dad.
I think Dad should wait.
foreskin cheese sister moose biting... I think we can all see where this is going.

Crazed surgeon amputates patient's penis, chops it up
Fri Jul 16, 6:52 AM ET AFP to My Yahoo!
BUCHAREST (AFP) - A Romanian surgeon who underwent a fit of madness while operating on a man's testicles proceeded to amputate his penis and cut it into three pieces...
Amen, brother.
Well, you know, all of those deviant Orthodox Jews are a prime example of this phenomenon.
Fuuny. I would have figured the guys would have found you by now. Esp. Dave :')
"And, I don't care what anybody says about baby's not feeling it, that's got to hurt."
I watched my first sons circumcision, it was horrible, brutal, my son screamed in agony. My second son is intact and I'm a strong anti circumcision advocate. None of my three grandsons are circumcised.
Present.
