If both parents don't agree on the need for cosmetic surgery, it shouldn't be done. Period.

If a mother had sole custody, and wanted to get a two year old daughter's ears pierced, do you think this matter would be before a state supreme court?

Sorry but it's a power play (even if unconciously). When parents fight the kids always lose. Should this go to the courts? No, but both need to decide what's best for the child. Having custody doesn't mean the other is a bad parent. A mother that had a 2 y/o's ears pierced (which I also think is wrong) should discuss it with the father first.

Ear piercing is reversible. This isn't, and at two it's a much more difficult procedure.

It's nothing but cosmetic surgery.
