W.Va. School Bans 'Wife Beater' Shirts

KEYSER, W.Va. - Administrators at one West Virginia high school have seen enough of pajamas, spiked jewelry and underwear, including the muscle shirts known as "wife beaters."

A new dress code bans any attire that could "disrupt the educational process."

A committee of students, teachers and administrators at Keyser High School agreed the existing dress code needed some beefing up, Principal John Haines said.

Teenagers who wore pajamas and bedroom slippers for dress-up days during Spirit Week, for example, had begun wearing them on regular days, too. Administrators had also had enough of bare bellies and exposed panties.

The revised policy bans students from revealing any undergarment, including "wife beater" undershirts, and prohibits tube tops and halter tops. Shirts must be long enough to meet the waistband of the bottom garment.

Other banned items include hanging chains and spiked jewelry, see-through clothing, skirts higher than mid-thigh, and head coverings including bandanas and scarves.

Clothing with images or statements considered obscene, suggestive or violent are off-limits, as well as anything promoting drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

"There aren't a whole lot of changes," Haines said. "We just wanted to let people know as they begin purchasing clothes for the coming school year."

Well, I guess this solves the problem of wife beating in Keyser, West Virginia! But...how many of these high school boys have wives...?

This all sounds good to me, but then again I'm a proponent of school uniforms. I'm an easy sell.

They'll get a religious challenge on the head-covering ban, if they have any Jewish, Moslem, Mennonite, or Pentecostal-Holiness students. The first two seem unlikely, given the locale, and the Christians probably homeschool ...

Why is this news? Most schools ban those already...

What kind of idiot parent would let their child go to school in pajamas? What kind of idiot parent would let children wear revealing clothes that show their panties in public? I'm afraid the liberals have created millions and millions of morons who cant effectively parent their own degenerate, mentally defective, spawn, and rely on the nanny state to do it for them. Stories like this make me sick. I weep for the future of our nation.

This is weird: "spiked jewelry and underwear"

I've seen spiked jewelry before, but spiked underwear? That can't be comfortable.

I guess there really isn't much editing for clarity going on at AP.

No editing for clarity, content, nor for fact!

Being WV, they can start wearing sister beater tshirts and be talking about the same person.

My grandfather wore a guinea tee.

Oddly enough, he was from the Polish side of my family. My Italian grandfather preferred knitted shirts a la Casino.

at Keyser High School

I would've thought the principal's name was Mr. Kobayashi.
