WASHINGTON - Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife, said yesterday that states should have the final say over the legal status of personal relationships. The Cheneys have a lesbian daughter.
That stand puts her at odds with the vice president on the need for the constitutional amendment now debated in the Senate that effectively would ban gay marriage.
"I think that the constitutional amendment discussion will give us an opportunity to look for ways to discuss ways in which we can keep the authority of the states intact," Cheney told CNN's Late Edition.
The Senate began debate Friday on an amendment that defines marriage as a union of a man and woman as husband and wife.

Man, is he wise. A great point! Good parents dont raise their children to be 'happy', or they create unhappy brats. They raise them to be disciplined and kind and considerate, and from that comes the inner happiness of being a decent person.
Amazing, our 1st Three Presidents, giants all: An exemplar of leadership and statesmanship (Washington); a lover of virtue and wise Government (Adams); and an eloquent champion of freedom and liberty (Jefferson).
What's hysterical madness is what the Mass Supreme Court did last november - override 150 years of mass law on a whim, contrary to any regard for principled jurisprudence.
Given this craziness in our courts, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
And btw, the press is distorting Cheney's comments as in disagreement. The press is creating a myth that a constitutional amendment is against states rights. Actually the opposite, as a court will use 'full faith and credit' to overturn DOMA.
The 9th circus court of clowns has done worse, why not that?

Consider where we've come from, RavenMoon. In the old days, that being days of the Bible, homosexuals were stoned to death. I believe that the we treat people with far more tolerance than they deserve.
It is defined clearly in the Bible that homosexuality is immoral behavior and should not be tolerated. Hence, stoning was a hideous death which sent a clear example to others. Here it is: Homosexuality is wrong, period!
Now our Founding Fathers founded this society based upon Common Law from England, the Bible, and some good old fashioned sense. They didn't want government involved in people's lives. And that means in schools or any other government entity. Futhermore, the U.S. Supreme Court should not be making laws. That is the job of the legislature. Enough said.
I'd love for the States (meaning, the people) to have the final say over this, but seeing what just happened in MA, it ain't gonna happen! In many states, the elites who are pushing for homosexual marriage will keep the referenda from making it onto the ballots, and their liberal Judge friends will pull the 'right' of homosexual marriage out of thin air.
The only way to make this not a continual fight with homosexuals going out of their state to 'get married', then coming back and trying to force the issue in their home state is to make it a blanket policy in the country. That way, there is no problem with the 'Full Faith and Credit' with a more conservative State having to accept what a liberal State has done.
