ALBUQUERQUE Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.
Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.
"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."
As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights all core Democratic issues "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."
Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.
"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.
The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

Hey Mr. French, we've arlready heard you loud and clear..
It's not cold in H*** yet, Mr. Kerry.
Does he expect to get any fingers back?
Ewwwwwwwwww . . . Get 'yer cootie-mitts off us, Ketchup Boy! Go fondle Edwards.
Yaaaaawn has never voted against gun laws or late term abortion. He would gladly eliminate the 2nd amendment and was one of 15 Senators to vote against the Late Term Abortion Ban. These are more Kerry lies!
Pray for W and The Truth
How many of you actually buy Heinz ketchup anymore?
Dear Senator Kerry,
I will vote for you on one condition: you will actively support life and do everything in your power to protect the lives of unborn children including, but not limited to keeping partial birth abortion illegal.
What? I didn't think so.
Buh-bye.
People, what this means is his internal polling says there are more Conservative likely voters than liberal. He can't win without something other than his base and his base will tolerate anything at all from him.
If we are to win, we have to do the same. Bush will have to compete in the middle. If we make 3rd party noises, Kerry will take the middle and we'll have the most liberal senator in the Congress as president.
So all you guys (about 8% as polls have it) who are GOP and not supporting Bush because he's not conservative enough -- make your choice. Kerry's move to the middle and right has what value of credibility? Right, zero. You will have 5 additional staunchly pro Choice Justices replacing the retirees if Kerry is elected. With Bush, far fewer.
Make your choice. Your Constitution Party candidate will decide no, repeat, no judges. With Bush you'll get more judges who are more preferable than with Kerry.
Make your choice. Don't condemn your neighbors to life under liberals.
By the looks of things, with all the hugs, kisses, and ass-grabbing these two have been doing; it looks like Flip Flop I wants something else to share with Flip Flop II.
The man is sickening. Values...Divorces one rich wife to marry another...he was against abortion before he was for it...he's against homosexual marriage but against stopping it...etc...
John Kerry is a damned liar.
You'll never get this veteran's vote. You shame veterans everywhere. Go to H*ll and take your metrosexual 'b*tch' with you.
You gotta admit it's going to be a hoot watching Mr.(any way the winds blows)Kerry making the atttempt.
Kerry would have to go got to the right of Bush on ISSUES, not simply emphasize touchy-feely BS about traditional "values", to get votes of "people on the right".
Senator, unless you are willing to apologize for the lies you told about your fellow Vietnam veterans, unless you are willing to fully explain your fondness for big taxes, big government and small defense, and unless you are willing to publicly condemn the dispicable comments of your fellow liberals Al Gore, Howard Dean, Michael Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, then don't waste your breath trying to "talk to" us conservatives. You have nothing to say that would be of interest to us.
I forgot to add:
John Kerry can go tunicate himself twice, like in 2 + 2 = 4.
Ah, such visuals come to mind with the words, "joint interview with his VP Pick, John Edwards."
Hey Lurkin Lurch, don't waste your precious ketchup breath on conservatives. What you got, we don't want. Go kiss up to Whoopi and Bon Jovi again. They actually buy into your unintelligible doublespeak.
