If a cunningly disguised reconnaissance team from a far-flung galaxy fanned out across the globe, monitoring local media and expressions of public opinion ranging from polls to riots with a view to identifying Planet Earth's unifying creed or cause, they would surely conclude that Earthlings are united only in their disdain for the United States.
Anti-Americanism is now the only "ism" you can get away with in civilised company. Indeed, insofar as civilised company is synonymous with the educated middle class, anti-Americanism is virtually de rigueur.
There are two elements to it: opposition to the political, economic and military juggernaut that is America Inc, and distaste for American popular culture and the American way of life.
The latter often descends to racial stereotyping that portrays Americans as hog-fat, gun-waving simpletons whose wilful ignorance of the outside world is matched only by their bullying arrogance towards it, and whose pious sentimentality co-exists with a reverence for violence.
An irony here is that one of anti-Americanism's gurus, the film-maker and polemicist Michael Moore, is himself a prime example of Slobbus Americanus.
And if he turned his cynical gaze upon himself, Moore would note that his don't-let-the-facts-spoil-the-story assaults on his country and countrymen (his countrywomen are largely spared) have made him, in the American way, extremely rich.
Many of America's critics, whether visceral or intellectual, subscribe to both views, and the strands converge in the accusation of cultural imperialism: that America uses its economic predominance, particularly over the mass media, to impose its debased culture fast food, pornography, cinematic violence and Britney Spears, on the rest of us.

There's a damn good (as well as logical) reason for this.
The World's 'creme de la creme' (in Frog-speak) have been seeking liberty's refuge for 228 years
Can we start killing them now?
"The "culture" that the world hates so much is invented and dispensed by the liberal left"
This is the point that is rarely made...that which the "world" knows about America and our culture, is generally the product of our pop culture exports...movie's, music, etc. 99% of the world's population has never been to America, or spoken to a real American, but I'll bet that practically everyone has seen our movies and/or seen our music videos.
I find the vast majority of Hollywierd's pop-culture product to be disgustingly adolescent, vulgar and violent. Is it surprising to anyone that others judge us poorly based on the images exported by the movie makers.
It is beyond ironic that the Hollywood elite bemoan our lack of respect in the world, when they are the one's responsible for representing us in such a vile and degrading way.
I'm not a psychoanalyst, but it seems to me the Rest of the World has a rip-roaring inferiority complex.
Yeah, but they love our money.
No more hand out$ to them!!! No more help after floods, famine, earthquakes, no more doctors without borders...
That is just what I was thinking. When my lovely daughter was a teenager I told her that a bunch of women were saying bad things about another woman I know, a perfectly fine, beautitul, nice lady. My daughter said "They are JUST JEALOUS!" I think of that when I hear how the rest of the world hates us.
Paul Thomas is an idiot.

No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens
We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them
Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us
We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too
Boom goes London and boom Paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now
If the "Whole" World hates us (and I don't even believe this, we have many Allies still), then why are so many people trying to get into this country, legally & illegally? Name one country that has as many people trying to get across its borders other than America????
"It often seems that the Left is defined more by what it's against than what it's for, and what leftists object to most of all is America."
this is the real nugget. i can never get constructive input from any leftie--the only real idea they have is hatred of America the its traditions.
While overseas I was often asked if "The everybody in the US is really like you see in the movies?" Most places have at least a couple of locally produced shows or movies so I would simply ask if everybody in their country was like I saw in their shows.
The answer was usually an indignant, "Of course not!" followed by an "oh!" as the light dawned.
I'm all for a global government- as long as the United States runs it.
America is the greatest country. Where else can you live next door to a cat house, two doors away from a crack house, three doors from a meth lab, and the family four doors away just got married--not sure which ones or to whom, maybe the dog--and all this while putting a spacecraft into orbit around Saturn and making Iran--the world's first empire--fart involuntarily just by noting that Iran has 12 divisions on the border and nobody cares.
Or what it's for is very undefined. i.e., they're for the poor, for the children etc...
