Backup electrical systems failed to kick in

A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed Jul 14 2004 02:47:38 GMT-0700.

Sudan

June 30, 2004

This Travel Warning is being re-issued to remind Americans of continued terrorist threats aimed at Western and U.S. interests, and update them on concerns regarding the security situation in Sudan. This supersedes the Travel Warning of November 14, 2003.

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all travel to Sudan. Although the two parties to the long-running civil war are negotiating a peace accord to end the war, travel in the south is still dangerous. In addition, there is serious fighting in Darfur and a humanitarian crisis brought on by fighting, drought and famine.

As noted in previous Travel Warnings for Sudan, the U.S. Government has received indications of terrorist threats aimed at American and Western interests in Sudan. Terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, or kidnappings. U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk of indiscriminate attacks on civilian targets in public places, which include tourist sites and locations where westerners are known to congregate, and commercial operations associated with U.S. or western interests. As physical security remains high at official facilities, terrorists may turn towards softer targets, such as residential compounds.

Sporadic fighting has continued between Sudanese government forces, the Sudan Peoples' Liberation Army (SPLA), and various militias in the southern part of the country. Threats have been made against foreigners working in the oil industry in Upper Nile province. The potential for violence remains in the areas around Kassala and southern Blue Nile province. The ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains generally has been respected. At least one American relief worker was beaten and falsely accused of espionage. Other Americans have been held hostage. Travel into opposition-held areas of Sudan requires a specific travel permit from the SPLA or other rebel movements controlling the territory. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which normally operates in northern Uganda and occasionally receives shelter in southern Sudan, has allegedly threatened to target Americans.

There have been demonstrations in Khartoum against United States foreign policy. In some instances, demonstrators have thrown rocks at the U.S. Embassy and Westerners. Americans should avoid large crowds and demonstrations.

There are no U.S. consular officers resident in Sudan. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide consular services, including emergency assistance, is severely limited. Information describing the services available for American citizens can be found on the web site of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo: http://www.usembassy.egnet.net/sudan.htm.

U.S. citizens who remain in or travel to Sudan despite this Warning are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Sudan. The Embassy in Sudan is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum. The mailing address is P.O. Box 699, Khartoum. The telephone number is (249) 183-774-701 (0183-774-701 inside Sudan); fax (249) 183-774-137 (0183-774-137 inside Sudan). The workweek in Khartoum is Sunday through Thursday.

American travelers to southern Sudan are also encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. The Embassy in Kenya is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (254)(20) 363-6000; facsimile (254)(20)363-6410. In the event of an after-hours emergency, the Embassy duty officer may be contacted at (254)(20) 363-6170. The Embassy's international mailing address is P.O. Box 606 Village Market, 00621 Nairobi, Kenya. Mail using U.S. domestic postage may be addressed to Unit 64100, APO AE 09831, USA.

Further information on Sudan may be found in the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Sudan, and the East Africa Public Announcement, on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. Updates to security conditions may be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States, or 317-472-2328 from overseas.

CIA's Acting Chief Says Threat Highest Since 9/11

Jul 13, 8:39 PM (ET) By Tabassum Zakaria WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The terrorist threat against the United States in the run-up to the November election is as serious as at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, acting CIA Director John McLaughlin said on Tuesday.

"This is about as serious a threat environment as I have seen since 9/11," said McLaughlin, the deputy director who took over on Sunday pending appointment of a permanent successor to Director George Tenet who resigned amid criticism of the agency's performance.

"The quality of the information we have now is such that we have high confidence that the nation needs to be on guard," McLaughlin told Reuters in a telephone interview.

He said the threats were not pinned specifically to the Democratic and Republican political conventions this summer but to the whole period before the November presidential election.

"It's related to this period during which the country is exercising its democracy, it's this period particularly in the run-up to the election, but it's always a mistake in the counterterrorism business to focus uniquely on a date," McLaughlin said. The attackers would strike when they are ready and not because of a specific date, he said.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican, earlier on Tuesday told reporters that "the chatter and the texture of the chatter is the highest it's been since 9/11." Chatter refers to communications among terrorism suspects.

"There's a lot of members taking second thoughts about attending conventions," Roberts said, but added that he planned to attend.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge renewed public warnings last week of possible attacks by al Qaeda in the United States this year, but offered no details and said there were no plans to raise the terror threat level.

"Credible reporting now indicates that al Qaeda is moving forward with its plans to carry out a large-scale attack in the United States in an effort to disrupt our democratic process," Ridge said........

Reference EOM's latest psycho sexual screed:

Thats a pretty good example of what we were talking about in the last day or so. It almost sounds like EOM read TM, came up with an idea or two on how to terrorize those deadly dreaded infidel Americans, and posted it somewhere he knew would get him some attention.

There isnt an original thought in the whole message.

If anyone here at TM believes as I do, that TWA Flight 800 was a Terrorist attack that was covered-up by the Clinton White House than read on. I think that the July 17th anniversary date could also be a clue, with regard to our recent increase in "chatter".

TWA 800 - Wreckage Missing, Cases Pending, Eight Years Later (July 17th is the Anniversary Date)

E. Falmouth, MA (PRWEB) July 14, 2004 -- As the eight-year anniversary of the TWA 800 crash approaches, the first piece of wreckage that separated from the plane is missing. Navy divers located and recovered this piece, which left the plane at apparent supersonic speeds, but the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) failed to list it in their official debris field map..........

Substantive and worthy read. Thanks.

I'd personally like to see Jim give a worthy TMMMer moderating powers over the thread.

I'd NOT like to see some of the ornery, strident folks overly given to heavy-handed, haughty clique-y snippy-ness to be so designated.

But there are some seemingly more or less balanced old timers hereon--any one of which would make a fine leader. I suppose some would have more time than others. Perhaps a small group of them could share the duties if they were sufficiently like-minded.

I suppose we could FREEPMAIL Jim with suggestions as to who but it would be best to query individuals privately to see if they'd be willing to so serve. And, I have no real idea as to how Jim would receive such a suggestion.

Short of that, I suppose we could hold a straw poll as to Sr and Jr leaders and the CHOOSE to submit to their decisions in the operations of the thread. Anyone not complying could be VERY cold shouldered and ignored totally.

Just my 2 cents.

Emergency landing at South Bend Regional Airport (Chicago - July 13th)

The pilot was overheard saying his eyes were burning

Posted: 07/13/2004 10:46 pm Last Updated: 07/13/2004 10:47 pm Story filed by NewsCenter16 Reporter Judi Lykowski A Southwest Airlines flight on its way to Chicago was forced to make an emergency landing at South Bend Regional airport Tuesday evening.

Southwest flight 933 was on its way from Raleigh, North Carolina to Midway Airport in Chicago when the pilot called for the emergency landing.

The pilot was overheard saying his eyes were burning and several members of his flight crew had similar discomfort.

Emergency crews scrambled into place When the flight made its approach emergency crews scrambled into place and set up on the runway. The emergency crews even backed away from the plane as it taxied into place.

"They had a report of smoke in the cabin and some passengers were having symptoms of discomfort so they landed here and they have mechanics that are going to look at the plane," said Airport Director of Operations Marci Greenberger, shortly after the plane landed.

Fortunately the crews weren’t needed and everyone on the plane was safe. Airport security checked out the aircraft and another Southwest plane out of Midway was called in to pick up the passengers.

"Department of Public Safety inspected the plane from the outside and it looked from the outside to not be a problem," stated Greenberger.

Passengers waited in plane for over four hours However it wasn’t an easy night for those on board the flight. The 110 passengers sat on the runway for over four hours. The torrential rains that pummeled Michiana made their situation even worse. Strong winds, rain and lightening delayed the passengers change to another plane, keeping them on the runway longer then expected.

The passengers were being prepared to fly out of South Bend and land in midway late Tuesday night. There is still no word on where the smoke in the cabin was coming from.

The pilot told NewsCenter 16 that one of the passengers on board was going to make a transfer to his final destination in South Bend, so Southwest allowed that gentleman to get off of the plane.

Yes, all of the MA cities on the Red Cross list could be along evacuation routes from the city of Boston. But the Red Cross is looking to hire one or two people and the positions in Beverly and Newburyport are part-time. I don't think these few people would be able to make much of an impact in any evacuation situation. I really think their focus would be community education/prepartion.
