SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.
The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.
"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.
Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.
Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."
Daschle said the most recent terror briefing was the second this week and contained information that there is a higher threat than there has been at any time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Boy you said a mouthfull...I am going on a road trip this summer to see 12 Rush concerts from West Palm and Tampa through Atlanta through D.C., NJ,NY,MA,PA...terrible feeling in my stomach.
I personally don't think it's going to be any of the Conventions, except they may try for the Republican Convention, to kill President Bush (and Cheney) and throw the country into chaos and make it easy for Kerry to defeat whoever the next Republican nominee may be. Al Qaeda is insane, but cunning and devious.
Al Qaeda is also known for simultaneous attacks.
Other attacks could be anything -- they go for mass casualty and economic targets. There are many possibilities.
Wow when I went to work this AM Intelligence sucked. Then I come home to find everyone is believing in it again ?
Kewl !...........Stay Safe !
This is scary, I must say ('specially since I work a block away from the Library Tower in LA which apparently has been identified as a target).
The only think that gives me pause on this is Daschle's comment about using this for political purposes. I guess I'd have to really see the context on this one. I wonder if there any hint sarcasm in his voice. If he's serious, then he's gone on record that he's on notice of the threat. Now I'd like to hear what he thinks we ought to do about it before it happens.
The Houston ship channel. One fertilizer ship explosion or one dirty bomb or half a dozen RPGs could cut off 1/3 of our petroleum supplies/refinery capability.
Araabs understand petro, not nuclear reactors or electrical grid switching stations, or public water supplies or...
Is there a thread telling the exact words of the terror report? On Fox today they said it involved possible nuclear [sp?] attacks on 7 to 10 U.S. cities!!
To Kerry, it was an ExpedientBoat.
They'll NEVER hit the Boston convention and they won't go after President Bush. They like trains, but Grand Central's routes have all been rerouted...so that leaves the N.Y.C. subway system. But should they try that,it won't make Americans vote for Kerry;however, they don't understand that.
Not conventions. They'd hit normal Americans going to work or shopping or whatever. And it'd be very close to election day if they were trying to impact that. Like within a day or two of the election.
Or would the desired effect be just to cause chaos and somehow postpone the elections?
I don't doubt that the terrorists are more than willing to do whatever they think will help them...I just can't figure out what it is.
Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Daschle replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."
Yes,that's more their style.
Are you confusing the report with the guy selling his book on the suitcase bombs?
There are plenty of commuter train lines from the burbs that they could hit. During rush hours NJ Transit in Hoboken is full of people on their way to Manhattan. They don't want to blow up stuff. They want to murder people.
Don't forget about the hildebeast cautioning us about 'October surprise outside influences that would sway the election one way or the other.'
FoxNews reported that the FBI issued a bulletin about noticing a lot of suspicious people taking a lot of suspicious pictures and videos about places relating to the energy industry.
Your scenario may be a realistic one.
An attack wouldn't stop our election.
I doubt that human bombs(which is what they seem to like best)will make anyone vote for Kerry. And THAT is what they don't "get".:-)
