Flashback: Kerry calls Edwards "inexperienced," Edwards derides Kerry as "Washington Insider"

National Public Radio (NPR) September 17, 2003 Wednesday

KEN RUDIN (NPR Political Editor): Well, if you don't want a Northeast liberal as your Democratic nominee, you have John Edwards, the senator from North Carolina. You know, it's interesting, everybody was criticizing John Edwards. This is his first term in the Senate. He only has five years experience in the US Senate. And everybody said he's not qualified, he's not ready for it yet. And here we have General Clark, who has no experience in public office.

News & Record (Greensboro, NC) March 7, 2004

Only one person ultimately chooses Kerry's running mate. And there is no guarantee that the New Englander will size up Edwards as a suitable companion in what promises to be a brutal fight to prevent President Bush from serving another four years.

Kerry has disparaged Edwards as inexperienced and unlikely to carry his home state in a general election if matched against Bush. The latter point is especially pertinent: Kerry probably wants a partner who can deliver several states and their crucial electoral votes.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pennsylvania) March 1, 2004

While Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, who has three times as many delegates as his leading rival, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, suggested that the one-term Edwards was too inexperienced for the job of president, Edwards parried that Kerry, who has been a senator for 19 years, is a Washington insider who would deliver "the same old Washington talk that people have been listening too for decades."

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH(LONDON) February 04, 2004

Mr Edwards hopes his ready smile, his southern roots and his working-class origins may yet persuade Democrats that he has a better chance of wooing voters from President George W Bush than Mr Kerry. But aides on Mr Kerry's campaign played down the significance of South Carolina, suggesting that Mr Edwards is too inexperienced - he is a one-term senator - to compete against Mr Bush.

Obviously they've both flipped.

And in November, they'll flop.

Senator McCain, please wake up and answer me! Fox reported this morning that McCain said he considered both Kerry and Edwards to be close personal friends and he wouldn't criticize them.

Now why didn't he accept Kerry's offer?
