Flashback: Kerry calls Edwards "inexperienced," Edwards derides Kerry as "Washington Insider"

National Public Radio (NPR) September 17, 2003 Wednesday

KEN RUDIN (NPR Political Editor): Well, if you don't want a Northeast liberal as your Democratic nominee, you have John Edwards, the senator from North Carolina. You know, it's interesting, everybody was criticizing John Edwards. This is his first term in the Senate. He only has five years experience in the US Senate. And everybody said he's not qualified, he's not ready for it yet. And here we have General Clark, who has no experience in public office.

News & Record (Greensboro, NC) March 7, 2004

Only one person ultimately chooses Kerry's running mate. And there is no guarantee that the New Englander will size up Edwards as a suitable companion in what promises to be a brutal fight to prevent President Bush from serving another four years.

Kerry has disparaged Edwards as inexperienced and unlikely to carry his home state in a general election if matched against Bush. The latter point is especially pertinent: Kerry probably wants a partner who can deliver several states and their crucial electoral votes.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pennsylvania) March 1, 2004

While Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, who has three times as many delegates as his leading rival, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, suggested that the one-term Edwards was too inexperienced for the job of president, Edwards parried that Kerry, who has been a senator for 19 years, is a Washington insider who would deliver "the same old Washington talk that people have been listening too for decades."

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH(LONDON) February 04, 2004

Mr Edwards hopes his ready smile, his southern roots and his working-class origins may yet persuade Democrats that he has a better chance of wooing voters from President George W Bush than Mr Kerry. But aides on Mr Kerry's campaign played down the significance of South Carolina, suggesting that Mr Edwards is too inexperienced - he is a one-term senator - to compete against Mr Bush.

A perfect Bush/Cheney ad would be made up of soundbites of Kerry & Edwards badmouthing each other. Just show them saying the things about each other and then end with "I'm George bush and I approve this ad"

How long will it take until the "gravitas" factor re-emerges?

I am not holding my breath.

As far as governing is concerned (and that of course is what a President does), Kerry is just as inexperienced as Edwards.

All Senators are.

Can't we all just move on. This argument is just like the land deals, oral digitization in the White House and that Marcy Park snaffu.

Rah, rah. Anyone but Bush. Now let Katie get on with here foreplay.

OK, FReepers--time to come up with a great slogan like that "Sore-Loserman" of 2000.

"SKerry-Squidward" ???

Given their fixation on the Kennedy "mystique" and how proud they are of Senator Kennedy, I'd say "Scary Ted Hordes" is an apt term for most of their supporters. Given the inability of John/John to face current national security reality, I'd suggest "Very Backwards." Given their tendencies to drag the country down the tubes, I'd vote for "Scary Deadwood."

Kudos to Susan Estrich for correctly predicting the vp.
I believe she said by not choosing Edwards, Kerry would bum out more voters than any other choice.

Kerry calls Edwards a beltway insider? That's rich..

These guys would claim to be Jimmy Hoffa if they thought it would get them a vote.

Disgusting.

I like it.

We can get much mileage out of the "Two Johns" theme.

My bad. I saw "Kerry calls" and just skimmed it for the adjectives. Normally covers it.
