FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

Pa.'s 5 nuclear power plants to be guarded over holiday

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania National Guard and the state police will guard the state's five nuclear power plants around the clock at least through Independence Day, Gov. Rendell said yesterday.

Rendell said that he knew of "no credible threat," but made the move "in an abundance of caution."

"At a minimum, we will maintain this deployment status through the holiday weekend," Rendell said. He and former Gov. Mark Schweiker have instituted similar measures on various occasions since Sept. 11, 2001.

The state's nuclear power plants are Limerick in Limerick Township, Montgomery County; Beaver Valley in Shippingport Borough, Beaver County; Susquehanna in Salem Township, Luzerne County; Peach Bottom in Delta Borough, York County; and Three Mile Island in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County.

3 young children who attend the same day care center in the Bronx have been infected with the _Escherichia coli_ bacterium, city health officials said yesterday, 1 Jul 2004. They are investigating whether as many as 18 other
children at the day care center are also infected. 2 of the infections, which occurred at the "For Kids Only" day care center, were first reported to city officials by physicians at a Bronx hospital last Fri, 25 Jun 2004,
said Dr Don Weiss, the director of surveillance for the Bureau of Communicable Diseases, which is part of the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Another case was reported on Mon, 28 Jun 2004.

The children range in age from 7 months to 3 years old, Dr Weiss said. A 4th child, who does not attend For Kids Only, has also been infected, Dr Weiss said, and may have had contact with children who do attend the center. All 4 children were initially hospitalized, but only 1 remains in the hospital, in stable condition, Dr Weiss said. The exact cause of the outbreak has yet to be determined.

As soon as city officials learned of the outbreak, they sent a medical team, including an epidemiologist, to the day care center. They then called the families of all the children who attend the center regularly to see whether they had developed symptoms of infection. The families of 18 children reported possible symptoms. The owners of For Kids Only are cooperating with the investigation and have voluntarily closed its doors, Dr Weiss said.

The west bay of Hidden Lake has been placed on health alert status by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) due to toxic algae in the water.

People who have contact with the water can develop a rash, and any animals who drink the water could die, said Rich Webster, public information officer with the Department of Environmental Quality. In extreme cases, which are rare, people who have ingested water contaminated with the toxic
algae have died, he said. The west bay tested at high levels, but the rest of the lake was low, he said.

The tests were done on samples taken the weekend of 19 Jun 2004. A DEQ staff member was visiting the area and saw a blue-green algae that he considered suspicious, Webster said. The man took samples of the west bay water and algae to DEQ headquarters in Lincoln for testing.

Webster said staff members returned to Hidden Lake on Monday to collect a second sample. The results of that test are expected today or Friday and will be posted on the DEQ's Web site, http://www.deq.state.ne.us, he
said. When a lake tests high, it is tested weekly until the numbers go down, he said.

DUBAI (Reuters) - The militant group The Army of Ansar al-Sunna says in a purported Internet statement that it has beheaded a U.S. Marine kidnapped in Iraq.

"We tell your leadership that we beheaded the Marine of Lebanese origin Hassoun and you will see the film with your own eyes soon," said the Arabic-language statement which was carried on at least two Islamic websites on Saturday.

An Arabic television last Sunday screened a videotape of militants holding a blindfolded Wassef Ali Hassoun with a sword poised over his head.
