FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

TO JIHADIS, JIHADI SUPPORTERS, JIHADI WANNABES:

America is a free Republic.
I'm posting this note to you on FreeRepublic.com.
We have liberty here in America as well as free speech.
Right now, I will exercise my free speech.

Laugh if you want, but you, girls and boys are petty
and your attitudes are ugly.

You know what I'm talking about here?

First, you plaster this gentleman's name, address and phone
number on the internet. (You weren't content with all your
petty little attempts at hacking his site).

Now I see he had a letter mailed to him threatening him
with beheading.

http://internet-haganah.us/harchives/002308.html#002308

You know, in America, this kind of thing just isn't tolerated.
If you don't unerstand this, you will eventually.

May God bless you all.
May he soften your hearts and turn your minds from evil and
hate to love and peace.

Yes. God is great.
He is an awesome God.
If you don't understand that now;
you will when you meet your Maker.

Thanks for the thought JP! If anything goes off over here I will be sure to run to my computer and post it here first.

I was in Manchester last weekend and the city was evacuated because suspicious packages were found at the Arndale shopping centre. That was pretty scary. Security is definitely tighter here at the moment.

About 8 miles from where I live we have the biggest shopping centre in Europe, The Trafford Centre. I don't go unless I have to, I've always thought it to be too big a terror risk.

Saying that, I was in New York in February 2003 when they were at orange alert. I think my mum watched the FNC 24 hours a day whilst I was there to make sure New York was still there! I felt compelled to go after visiting in 2000 before 9/11. Having been to the top of the WTC then, I couldn't quite believe what had happened. I love that city.

Classified Information Items Missing at LANL(Los Alamos National Labs - Classified Items Missing Again - July 9th)

July 9, 2004 The Associated Press LOS ALAMOS — Two items containing classified information are missing from Los Alamos National Laboratory, a lab spokesman said Friday.

The items — so-called "Classified Removable Electronic Media" — were discovered missing from the Weapons Physics Directorate during an inventory check Wednesday, lab spokesman Kevin Roark said.

While Roark refused to say if the items contained information that could jeopardize national security if in the wrong hands, he said the CREM items could include products like compact flash disks, CDs and floppy disks.

A search was under way Friday, and lab Director Peter Nanos said he would order a full inquiry into what happened.

"In order to operate effectively, this apparent lack of attention to CREM issues must be dealt with swiftly and decisively," Nanos said. This is the second such incident in recent months. Material also classified as CREM was reported missing in May. That data had been set to be destroyed before it went missing, Roark said at the time.

Roark acknowledged Friday that this situation is different because the items were to be used for an upcoming experiment and are in fact missing. He added that Nanos' tone is also different this time.

"What's different in this case is the director is saying this won't stand," Roark said. "If you can't keep track of classified material, then you can't work at Los Alamos anymore. The director is serious." U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., said he was incensed by this latest security failure at the northern New Mexico lab.

"That this is occurring in the current atmosphere of heightened security awareness is intolerable. . . . At this point, the lab needs to ramp up their plans to move all this classified information to secure servers," Udall said. "We also need a full investigation to get to the bottom of what went wrong here."

Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration officials have been notified of the latest incident.

In recent years, the lab taken steps to reduce CREM inventory, reevaluate its procedures and retrain personnel. Nanos said the new policies and procedures address many security concerns. "However, once again, the failure of individuals to follow prescribed standards and protocols has brought disrepute to Los Alamos," he said. Pete Stockton with the Project on Government Oversight in Washington D.C., said it's time for the Department of Energy to take a more active role in the investigation. "We really believe that (Energy Secretary Spencer) Abraham should send a team out there and see what's going on," Stockton said in a telephone interview.

The University of California has run Los Alamos since the lab was created as the headquarters of the Manhattan Project — the secret effort to create the first atomic bomb — in 1943.

The contract is up for bids after management failures in recent years, including the firing of two investigators who raised allegations of mismanagement, abuse of lab purchasing and financial malfeasance.

SKorea Warns of Terror Attacks on Ships (July 10th),

Saturday, July 10, 2004 · Last updated 2:08 a.m. PT THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea has put its shipping companies on alert after an Islamic militant group threatened to destroy vessels carrying U.S. military goods in the Middle East, news reports and intelligence officials said Saturday.

The government's National Intelligence Service said it found an Arabic language Web site carrying a threat to "attack ships carrying strategic materials for the U.S. military."

It cited a South Korean shipping company and eight other shipping firms from the United States, the Netherlands and Hong Kong as its targets, news reports said.

"We have told the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry, maritime police and other related agencies to take measures to guard against terrorism," a spokesman for the intelligence agency said on condition of anonymity.

The spokesman gave no further details. Link to Article

There are those here who think that our accuracy rate is "dismal".

I said our accuracy rate is dismal, and it is, and I pray to God that it always will be dismal and that none of the stuff that we predict or speculate about will ever become a reality. We will probably never know whether an attack was prevented because of information posted on this thread. I would like to think that we've made a difference, but even if we haven't, yet, we might in the future, and that by itself is an incentive to keep doing what we do here.

Alaska Man Charged in Bomb Threat (Update to the Wisconsin Train Bomb Threat)

July 10, 2004 BY NATASHA KORECKI Staff Reporter An Alaska man was charged Friday with phoning in a bomb threat that prompted the evacuation of nearly 300 people from an Amtrak train as it traveled through Wisconsin this week.

The FBI arrested Michael David Conwill, 35, of Anchorage, Alaska, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Chicago's Union Station. Conwill appeared in federal court Friday and was ordered transferred to the custody of federal authorities in Madison, Wis., where he was charged.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Drury said Conwill probably will be relocated early next week and will remain in custody until then because he is a flight risk, Drury said.

Conwill is charged with making bomb threats while aboard the train traveling from Seattle to Ashland, Ky. It was stopped in Portage, Wis., where authorities searched the train for six hours using explosives' experts and dogs. All the passengers were taken to a school building and interviewed. No bomb was found.

The phone calls were later traced to Conwill's cell phone, prosecutors allege. Conwill made several phone calls, according to a criminal complaint. The first call was to the Juneau County Sheriff's Department dispatcher at 1:19 p.m. Tuesday.

The caller repeated twice that "there is a bomb on the train going to Chicago," then hung up. He called back a few minutes later and said "Wisconsin Dells. Train. Bomb," according to the complaint. Later, in two 911 calls to a sheriff's dispatcher in Sauk County, Wis., the caller said, "letting train go. . . . I don't know why." And then: "Better stop that train."

The only way a Sunday would matter is with a large event in DC,particularly involving our President,Congress and /or heads of state.

Agreed. Is there anything like that going on this Sunday?

No way to determine if we indeed found them all. Some could have been missed. What disturbs me the most is that they were empty. The article doesn't say how long the bags/packages sat, but I bet somewhere close by was a terrorist closely watching his wristwatch.

I recall the original article about the mysterious suitcases and concluded either (a) our enemy is probing and practicing for the real thing; or (b) some sicko(s) is playing games. But here's what bothers me about the terrorist angle: Why would a terrorist care how long the bags/packages sit undisturbed when the MO of the past has been suicice/homicide bombings in a quest for the 72 virgins.

Asked if the timing of the terror concerns might be aimed at stealing political thunder from the announcement of John Edwards as the democratic vice presidential candidate, Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., replied, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe anyone in this administration would use this for political purposes."

By answering the question the way he did, Daschole is implying exactly the opposite of what he said. The better answer would have been, "The report is so sobering and so serious that I cannot bring myself to believe that even a leftist reporter like yourself would ask such a stupid question."
