FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States didn’t have authorization from the U.N. nuclear watchdog when it secretly shipped from Iraq uranium and highly radioactive material that could be used in so-called “dirty bombs,” U.N. officials said Wednesday.

The nearly 2 tons of low-enriched uranium and approximately 1,000 highly radioactive items transferred from Iraq to the United States last month had been placed under seal by the International Atomic Energy Agency at the sprawling Tuwaitha nuclear complex, 12 miles south of Baghdad, the officials said.

The all-clear was sounded at the John A. Wilson Building downtown, more than an hour after police evacuated the building because of a threat reportedly made against the D.C. Council.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department was informed that the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union newspaper received a threat against the council, said Tony Bullock, chief spokesman for D.C. Mayor Anthony A. ATF: 200 Pounds Of Explosives Stolen From Storage Facility Explosives Discovered Missing Over Holiday Weekend

POSTED: 10:35 pm PDT July 6, 2004 UPDATED: 10:49 pm PDT July 6, 2004 SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Approximately 200 pounds of high explosives have reportedly been stolen from a storage facility in San Mateo County, and federal officials Tuesday said they're reluctant to reveal details of their ongoing investigation into the theft.

The theft occurred in the vicinity of Crystal Springs and was discovered over the holiday weekend, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A number of agencies share use of the storage facility, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the San Francisco Police Department and the San Mateo County sheriff's office, said bureau spokeswoman Marti McKee.

All of the agencies are participating in the ATF investigation that was launched Tuesday morning to try and locate the stolen explosives, McKee said.

John Torres, special agent in charge of the ATF investigation, said that recovering the explosives is "absolutely a top priority" for the bureau.

"ATF will employ all the resources available to us to track down these stolen explosives, return the explosives to safe storage, and find those responsible for the theft," Torres said.

In general, McKee said, high explosives like dynamite require detonation, whereas lower explosives like pipe bombs typically go off after being ignited.

The bureau is requesting that anyone with relevant information contact their local police departments or call (888) ATF-TIPS.

Interesting link in your post @ #2075, thanks. The story is a little hard to follow, but I think I got it. All of the Brits were in Saudi Arabia some time ago. At some point one of the Brits got blown up in a car bomb and the Sayowedis, for reasons unknown, framed the other remaining Brits, tortured them, got confessions, and sentenced them to cruceifixion, followed by beheading. Then they use the Brits like gambling chips to get prisoners out of Gitmo, and it worked? Weird.

I'm glad the Brits are out of danger, but worried about the release of Gitmo prisoners. It isn't easy to get sent to Gitmo in the first place. The prisoners there must be the worst of the worst to have been sent there.
