I've joked with the pastor of our church that if we wanted to increase membership, all we had to do was to serve free beer.

I was joking! And somebody goes out and actually does this! It may be entirely legitimate, but I think it stand to reason that this will raise more than a few eyebrows...

Interesting idea. I imagine they might be able to help people, i.e. if someone has gone to the bar to escape their troubles. Jesus didn't preach in the Synagogue's much. He went out to where the people were. This seems to go along with the theme.
