WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) courted Hispanic voters, promising to be a US president "who knows where Latin America is."
"That's why it's been such a disappointment that this administration has forgotten (former president Franklin) Roosevelt's good advice," Kerry told the convention of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.
Kerry underscored that, in contrast to his rival President George W. Bush (news - web sites), Roosevelt had said the United States is a neighbor "who resolutely respects the rights of others."
"Instead of being a good neighbor, the president has ignored a wide range of ills, including political and financial crisis, runaway unemployment and drug trafficking," the Massachusetts senator said.
"And his one-tone policy toward Latin America of one-size-fits-all trade agreements have stripped the respect and partnership that marked the Clinton years" from 1993 to 2000, Kerry charged.
As president, said Kerry, he would forcefully support democratic institutions, protect democracy where it is threatened and promote democracy in Cuba.
In addition, he promised to forge a new and broader Community of the Americas based on "the defense of democracy and rule of law."
Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States.

Kerry: He not only knows where Latin A,merica is, he claims to be fluent in pig latin.
Several months ago, the same Kerry was promising an international minimum wage, too.
Kerry's not sure whether he's running for President of the US or President of the UN.

The title of this article tickles me. With ketchupman's penchant for flip flopping, if (big IF) he got the presidency, he'd be asking "now where is Latin America? Is that in Florida or California?"
