Bush Reasserts Hussein-Al Qaeda Link

President Draws Distinction Between Involvement in 9/11 Attacks, Other Contact

By Walter Pincus and Dana Milbank

Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, June 17, 2004; 12:45 PM

President Bush insisted today that "numerous contacts" between the ousted government of Saddam Hussein and the al Qaeda terrorist network showed that the former Iraqi leader was a threat to the United States, despite a report by the Sept. 11 commission that found no "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and al Qaeda.

About time is right.

And now there's a thread on FR - Blair says AQ was working in Iraq.

We know Saddam worked with the PLO and other terrorists, he funded them. He at LEAST knew that 9/11 was coming.

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

The person selected to preside over the first Iraqi Congress, Dr Ayad Allawi, has already said the smoking gun documents exists. Bush is very well aware of the situation or he wouldn't be sticking out his neck on this.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Saddam trial is right over the horizon but soon it'll be upon us. I believe it will not happen until Saddam is prepared to issue a statement to the effect of "my Feyadeen, I could not control but yes they did interact and instruct Atta and others". That'll be the coup de grace in this particular Presidential election. Kerry and his Michael Moore sychophants will officially be TOAST.

It's coming. Bush knows he holds the ace card.

Shortly after Cheney asserted these links, Bush contradicted him, saying: "We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with the September 11th." But Bush added: "There's no question that Saddam Hussein had al Qaeda ties."

That's not exactly what was said and he didn't contradict himself ..

Well these idiots in the media take the plugs out of their ears AND PAY ATTENTION ???

A lot of people that believe news stories as news even when the stories are written as highly interpreted as possible without ending up on the opinion page. Otherwise intelligent people are grasping at this straw today.

Yep and Saddam was just a warm fuzzy kind of guy who would never hurt anyone .. and he wasn't really funding terrorists to kill people ... he was just giving them aid and comfort ... just like the UN was doing with their Food for Oil progam

How silly of us to think otherwise .. I'm soooo glad the media got to the truth of it all

Pincus and Milbank have been pretty much against the notion to Iraq and al-Qaeda working together.

Milbank also did that infamous pool report prior to 9/11.

Asked about the commission's findings on an Iraq-al Qaeda link, Bush said, "This administration never said that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated between Saddam and al Qaeda. We did say there were numerous contacts between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. For example, Iraqi intelligence officers met with bin Laden, the head of al Qaeda, in the Sudan. There's numerous contacts between the two."

Bush said he had called Saddam Hussein a threat "because he had used weapons of mass destruction against his own people. He was a threat because he was a sworn enemy to the United States of America, just like al Qaeda. Now, he was a threat because he had terrorist connections, not only

Where's Congress?? Why can't we ever get them on the same page as the White House and start a real drumbeat to get a point across like the 'Rats can? Instead of Republican Senators supporting our Administration we get to see Hatch, McCain, Lugar and Hegel work their own agendas at cross purposes to the President's.

I wonder if GWB was waiting for the 911 kangaroo commission to do this. I know he has a penchant for suckering the libs into flapping their lips until he has them all on record and then making them all look stupid. I believe we are about to witness the complete marginalization of the so called commission.
