The press-holes fear one thing above all else: being made a fool of in front of their press-hole peers. Being slapped down is not something they want. W. marked his terrority today.
THe President called on Jonathon ??? of CNN. He usually covers Congress and the President was asking him why he was at Sea Island.
This guy Jonathon had the worst interview I have ever seen with Hillary Clinton. It was during 9/11 coverage and he let Mrs. Clinton go on and on about how the tax cuts were to blame for terrorists attacking the US. He kept standing there with the microphone in awe refusing to ask her a question.
This was exactly like he was a week or two ago when the new Iraqi Govt. was announced. I thought at the time that he looked much more confident and upbeat.
At the time (and again today) I can't help wondering if he knows something we don't yet. Maybe news on WMD? Bin Laden? Internal Polls? I don't know but something has changed to dramatically increase his confidence and mood.
It's a Kerry point that we don't have allies...Ever wonder how kindly the Brits and others take to that attitude?...

W. really needs to fire the handlers and be himself. When he goes on TV pre-programmed, he looks horrible. Remember how he was when campaigning for senate candidates in 2002? That's the attitude he needs to reclaim.

So the LA Times says Kerry is ahead in the polls, but I still say when the debates happen and the public sees Bush handle Kerry like he handles the press, any hope that Kerry might have had will vanish.
I saw a clip on Brit Hume's show the other evening that featured both President and Mrs. Reagan at the podium during one of those White House Press Corps dinners. The President was asking Mrs. Reagan to say a few nice words to the members of the audience. She just stood there. He asked her a second time, again, she had nothing to say. It was funny but also pretty chilling. I didn't realize that the press corp had always been this evil to Republicans. I'm glad to see our President slap down this disrespectful bunch.
I also liked his respone to the British? reporter who was going after the torture question - again saying it wasn't very comforting that Bush said to persue questioning within the Law. The Reporter commented that bush's response wasn't comforting because it wasn't a legal question it was a moral one.
GWB then proceeded to say well let me be more clear (if I can) it should be of comfort that we follow the law.

Oh Ambrose, he commanded the press today.
He was plain spoken, direct as heck, humorous
and friendly, and when necessary, (as it was on

and forthrightness, that he made them look petty.
It was his best press converence yet.

They were always mocking Nancy for staring adoringly at the President when he gave a speech. Intimating that she was nothing short of a Stepford Wife.
He was funny, on point, remembered to get in things that the press ignores (like the 7 Iraqis who got prosthetic hands) and had some nice zingers for the arrogant media members. I also thought it was great that he remembered to call on a local press representative, and use that opportunity to thank the people of Savannah.

Present and past opposition. Tony Blair said, shortly after Dubya's election, that he liked talking to Dubya because he could trust what he said, unlike Clinton. And of course, NOBODY knows what Kerry means.
I have to say that those heads of state at Sea Isle seemed unusually happy about something.
