June 10, 2004 -- NOW is a good time to look back at the landslide win that sent Ronald Reagan to the White House in 1980, because lots of analysts think 2004 could turn out the same way — close for a long time and then suddenly breaking wide open. In 1980, the break came just days before the vote, when Democrat Jimmy Carter finally agreed to debate. Reagan came off as sunny instead of scary and when he admonished Carter with a smile, "There you go again," it was all over.Like President Bush, Carter faced voters nervous over both the economy and foreign policy and wondering whether it's time for a change — in Carter's case, skyrocketing inflation at home plus the endless Iran hostage crisis.
But there's a big difference, since Carter kept getting bad news on both fronts, while Bush is starting to get good news on both the economy, with a surge in new jobs, and Iraq, with international support for the June 30 transfer of power.

P.S. The Night of the Long Knives wasn't about killing homosexuals, it was about killing Rohm and his followers since Rohm was becoming Hitler's rival. Homosexuals were not killed in extermination camps, only a tiny percentage of homosexuals were even arrested - and many of the camp guards and officers were homosexuals themselves, as were much of the SS.
Read the books I mentioned and inform yourself, before you embarrass yourself further.
You can only find out if you really want to know.
Such people live in the religiously based culture and accept subconsciously the rules and methods of that culture. They are not harmful to that culture, at least not in the short term.
I'm retired now from the Postal Service and it doesn't effect me, however, my former co-workers will most likely lean Democrat to protect their jobs. Just a thought. When it comes down to a person's pet issues: gun control, pro-life, or keeping their job -- the job's gonna win out.
I agree with most everything you are saying in this regard. We are living on the capital of the Judeo-Christian foundation of civilization. But the outcome is precarious, since the secularist/moral relativists (aka as socialists and leftists) have been on the attack for so long.

This discussion originally came from the suggestion that atheists are incapable of morality.
Now we're on to trust and free trade. I believe I have made a good case here that morality was woven into the fabric of religion, but exists independently from it. That is all I sought out to prove.
I really can't even begin to analyze these other tangents you're getting into. I would say that the majority of people in America right now are not practicing Christians even if they identify themselves as such because of family tradition and heritage. America is largely secular, and yet commerce and respect for the law continues, as strong as it ever was.
Now you would say this is possible because we live in a culture that was established on Christian roots. I can't argue with that, because it is true. But then how can one analyze these other products of modern civilization when there is no control group to compare to? It is impossible, and not to mention rather moot.
I thought Carter did pretty well to hang close as long as he did in 1980, considering the absolutely catastrophic economic and security situation of the time.
This was probably a measure of the power of the media, which had not yet peaked in those days. Reagan's skill as an actor and communicator probably trumped the media's pro-Carter bias in that case and allowed a fair hearing of the issues. We were very lucky to have had him. Like Churchill, he was exactly the right man at the right time.
People have not a clue of how liberal John Kerry is. When they learn the truth of his record, he will be repudiated with disgust.
The only reason Kerry is at parity with Bush is that the media is keeping him in the game. Kerry is so weak that the Bush people are deliberately playing low-key. If they use their arsenal now, Lurch won't even be nominated. The Bush people are duping the media and the RATS into believing that Jacques even has a chance.

We need a net pickup of 3 or 4 Senate seats to change the dynamics in the Senate re: judicial confirmations.
Contrary to the belief of many, we do not need 60 to break the logjam. We just need 55 or 56 to tip the balance... enough of the RATS up for re-election in 2006 will be scared into breaking the filibusters, particularly if Daschle is defeated in November.

I never said anything about Hitler or the Nazis. I said the "germans".
Regardless of what Hitler believed, or any other Nazi, for that matter, Hitler could not have done what he did without the consent of the German people. The Christian German people. Also, Hitler did use Christianity as a justification in his speeches, and the iron cross was a major symbol used by the Nazis.
I am aware of Hitler's experimentation with mysticism. His belief that "aryans" were the descendants of Atlantis. I am well aware of all of that, but I am also aware of his solid Christian background, and I am not about to believe that all or even a significant number of Nazis believed in such occultism.
My point was and remains that Germany was a Christian nation, and it happened there. Just as Christian nations launched the Inquisition and the Crusades.
My point being that religious belief does not deliver instant morality, and this goes for Christians as well. Just as lack of religious belief does not make one automatically immoral, or even more inclined towards immorality.
What the West had was traders who could trade on their own authority in a superior system that the Asians could not match. That is why the Europeans became the world traders, not the resources they started with but the mindset they traded with.

I totally agree...but sometimes (and PLEASE don't read this to being anti-Bush or pro Kerry, because it's not) I wonder if God might be disappointed at a country in which much of its leadership has been trying to eliminate Him, while crying out His name in rote song, or just when attacked, or when---well, never mind.
Burn me one? I also want recordings of the debate sketches on SNL this fall.
