Reagan's Condition Worsening

By the mid to late 1970s, we'd been through the Nixon and Ford administrations, and were mired in a Carter induced national nightmare.  The Vietnam war had taken it's toll.  Nixon, and as much or than him, the media had laid waste to this nation's morale.  Ford coasted through his term and then it was the peanut brain from hell.  Mailaise was the least of our worries.

Into this gloom and doom entered Ronald Wilson Reagan talking of that house upon a hill.  Many took his speaches as unrealistic campain fodder.  There were times during the run up to the election that I wondered if he could do what he said he would.  It made little difference, we might remain in trouble, but at least we'd have an upbeat leader extoling the virtues of our national being, and rallying the populace constantly.

It's unrealistic, somewhat childish to think or Reagan in terms of the perfect president.  Generally any two people don't see thing eye to eye on everything.  There's bound to be differences between them.  So it is with presidents and their supporters.  There will be issues that try their patience.  None the less, you can admire a man like Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Reagan saw a pariah state and challenged them to tear down that wall.  The world laughed, but sure enough, that wall came down.  His political opposition, his political allies, foreign dignitaries, the national and global media, at one point or another parted with Reagan on policy.  Some and perhaps most of them thought he was crazy at Rakiavic, playing hardball with Gorby.  When he excited looking grim, most were sure he'd overplayed his hand.  No, as time would tell he hadn't.

Reagan pushed the space defense initiative.  He fought high interest rates and won.  If he'd have done nothing more than encourage the American people as he did, rekindle a love for this nation and capitalize on it, he'd have been a great man.  Ronald Wilson Reagan did this and more.

He was the original can do guy.  He drug the world (kicking and screaming) with him into a new future.  For that I will always cherish the memory of Ronald Wilson Reagan, the man who (for me) epitomized what a president should be.

When Reagan left the White House for the last time, about all I could do was think to myself, "Thank you Mr. President.  Thank you for not only showing me what it was to be a great president, but showing me how to exude class as an adult male.

I know we are all saddened by what has taken hold of Reagan over the last ten years.  Then again I think many of us realize that God moves in mysterious ways.  I do thank God that Ronald Reagan is unaware of what Clinton did with his legacy.

When Nancy Reagan started her 'Just say no campaign, the media belittled her, the democrats blistered her for this 'laughable' campaign.  In the years Nancy pushed that program, drug use by teens dropped across the board.  I forget the exact figures, but it was in the range of 50-60%.  Then came Bill Clinton's appearance on MTV, laughing about using Marijuana and saying, "I tried using it.  I'd use it again if it did something for me, but it didn't.  This attitude ushered in a doubling of drug use by teenagers during his presidential years.

Ronald Reagan was the consumate gentleman.  Bill Clinton was the consumate "it's all about me" child.

Ronald Reagan, I'll never forget you.  I accept these years knowing that you have a very loving wife and extended family.  I know this has been hard on them.  It's been hard on you.

One more time I want to say thank you.  I wish you were able to sit at the helm again Mr. President.  The nation needs you.

They take care of us for so many years that to leave them to strangers wouldn't seem right ... I'm the oldest (my folks are only early 60's) so I feel obligated to stay nearby. I want to be there for them as they have ALWAYS been for me.

I guess the long goodbye is about over. I have this terrible feeling the press will use his passing as an excuse to renew their criticisms of his administration

When I look at the Euroscum protesting Bush in the streets of Rome and Paris, I think back to the massive protests against Reagan's conventional and nuclear buildup (INF) in Europe in the early 1980s. How soon we forget, but he was far more villified then than Bush is now. And looking back, there is not a single person who could say Reagan was wrong without being ridiculed. So history will also view George W. Bush's actions in the war on terror.

Sad news for us, but I'll be glad to see the Lord take him home. He has been through an unimaginable time with this disease. Lord be with Nancy and the family, and if this is his time let him gently pass.

You know, reading each one of these wonderful, thoughtful and loving posts have had tears pouring from my eyes. But Lando.....yours just did me in.

I have always respected, admired and loved that man. I just hope he goes gently and has the time to let me give him a big hug when I see him someday.

It is said that God works in mysterious ways....... by his passing, perhaps He is allowing the Gipper to help out his country and it's President during our darkest hour...... yet one more time.

May God bless Ronald Reagan, his dedicated Bride Nancy and his family.

Gipper.....thank you for everything that you did for me and my family. Go if you must, but know that "you made a difference" in our lives and that you touched our very souls.
