America, Recuse Thyself! (What would happen if we withdrew from foreign engagements)
WSJ Opinion Journal ^ | May 30, 2004 | P.J. O'ROURKE

Posted on 05/30/2004 8:34:39 PM PDT by FairOpinion

But we don't have to retreat ignominiously from the war on terrorism and from our other international responsibilities and commitments; we can recuse ourselves.

We can cut $300 billion from our defense budget.

America will enjoy cleaner air and less traffic congestion as oil goes to $200 a barrel due to chaos in the Middle East. A U.S. withdrawal from the Middle East will cause chaos, of course.

...the result will be serious headaches for Israelis as the Knesset furiously debates the status of Jewish settlements outside Damascus and on the west bank of the Euphrates.

Elsewhere, however, Islamic fundamentalists will likely triumph. Is this necessarily a bad thing?

The United Nations, freed from superpower interference, will assume its rightful role exercising peacemaking functions--and getting plenty of exercise at it. Scores of belligerents, freed from superpower interference, will create opportunities for U.N. peacemaking functions such as sending numerous bureaucrats, functionaries, commissions and inspection teams to keep combatants too busy with meetings and paperwork to have time to fight.

The threat of nuclear proliferation will abate as dangerous stockpiles of atomic weapons are quickly used up.

And the best thing about Americans recusing ourselves from global entanglements is that we will be loved again.

It's a satire -- don't jump through the ceiling after the first paragraph. I had to excerpt, but suggest reading the article to get the full effect. It's pretty amusing with lots of grains of truth in it, about what would really happen, if we acquiesced to world opinion and just came home, and left the rest of the world to its own devices.

Like the movie "A day without Mexicans" we could have a "Century without Americans". Imagine the 20th Century without the military might, wealth and moral leadership of the United States.

PJ O'Rourke should be given a cabinet post.

Just think -- how WWII would have turned out with the US, and take it from there...

Oh this is good! The last paragraph is classic.

I don't buy the fact that all of these other countries really hate us, well except for the Muslim ones. They would all be screaming for us to return to butting into their business if we actually did withdraw!

What is so bad about this article is that the idiots in Europe are chomping at the bit for just such a scenario, leaving them free to wheel and deal their weapons of mass destruction to the middle east, gain wealth and power, and have influence over the oil fields.

Enough grains of truth in this to bake a loaf.

On Brian Lamb's Booknotes tonight, his guest said America could defend itself with one quarter of what we now spend on defense. The other three-quarters now goes to protecting the rest of the world.

That way the Europeans could destroy Europe before the muslim immigrants do it for them. It's a deterrence program, don't you see...

"A Century Without Americans"

I wish somebody had the courage to make such a film; not tongue in cheek either .. only the real truth. Withdraw all the funds we give to other nations and the UN. Withdraw all the troops we have stationed all over the world.

Put up a big fence around the USA and ship all the Muslims back to the Middle East.

This is what the Liberterians want. This is isolationism. It would never work. We are a part of the world whether we like it or not, or whether most of the rest of the world is a bunch of stinking creeps.

"Isolationism" in the USA - in part or whole due to WWI - as I was taught in school, was the main reason Americans did not respond earlier to the terrorist threats in Europe prior to Pearl Harbor.

In agreement ... what is "preemptory" if the response is happening on the "big blue marble"?

I suggest this "movie" has already been made ... only it wasn't a movie.

Remembering our Vets on This Day.

Our own country was founded by people who, today, would be considered religious extremists.

America was founded by religious nuts with guns.

Below are the actual voting records of various Arabic/Islamic States which are recorded in both the US State Department and United Nations records:

Kuwait votes against the United States 67% of the time.

Qatar votes against the United States 67% of the time.

Morocco votes against the United States 70% of the time.

United Arab Emirates votes against the U. S. 70% of the time.

Jordan votes against the United States 71% of the time.

Tunisia votes against the United States 71% of the time.

Saudi Arabia votes against the United States 73% of the time.

Yemen votes against the United States 74% of the time.

Algeria votes against the United States 74% of the time.

Oman votes against the United States 74% of the time.

Sudan votes against the United States 75% of the time.

Pakistan votes against the United States 75% of the time.

Libya votes against the United States 76% of the time.

Egypt votes against the United States 79% of the time.

Lebanon votes against the United States 80% of the time.

India votes against the United States 81% of the time.

Syria votes against the United States 84% of the time.

Mauritania votes against the United States 87% of the time.

US Foreign Aid to those that hate us:

Egypt, for example, after voting 79% of the time against the United States, still receives $2 billion annually in US Foreign Aid.

Jordan votes 71% against the United States and receives $192,814,000 annually in US Foreign Aid.

Pakistan votes 75% against the United States receives $6,721,000 annually in US Foreign Aid.

India votes 81% against the United States receives $143,699,000 annually

It is time to get out of the UN and give the tax savings back to the American workers who are having to skimp and sacrifice to pay the taxes.

Now they want to cut oil production, We should cut aid to them by 50% to start.

Libya would like us again because they could keep their WMD programs and draw a "Line of Death" through the Mediterranean. China could finally be a friend after the shut down the busiest water way in the world and extend their national waters out to 200 KM which they claim and thereby shutting down Japan, Korea and Singapore. Hey, Korea could be united again! Taiwan too!! The Taliban could return to Kabul, since we pretty much the only ones hunting them. The Serbs could have "Lebensraum" all the way to the Adriatic. The world would be a better place!

Ignoring word security, a US presence also means US dollars (or euros, or camels). Look at the economic affect of a US base and what happens when one closes (assuming the congressional wheeler dealers allow it to happen). The jihadists might be glad to see us go, but rational people would prefer we (and our money) stay.
