If you happen to turn your TV set on at any time this Memorial Day weekend, there's a strong probability you'll come across a World War II war movie..... the classic Hollywood genre. There are many of them, and, happily a lot of very good ones. So, on this weekend of remembrance, and the dedication of the WW II memorial, what's your favorite, or favorites, and why?
The Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 17, Saving Private Ryan. Am I allowed three? :)
Well, the Battle of Mogadishu wasn't a defeat for us, even though the Somalia mission overall was. The battle portrayed in "BHD" was very lopsided, in fact, and it shows how good communication, superior firepower, and the will to get every man out saved the vast majority of our Rangers, Delta guys and pilots. Unfortunately, neither the book (which you should read first) nor the movie go into the political shenanigans that lead up to the Battle of Mogadishu, but any informed person will remember the developments of the day, and will come out fighting mad at the Klinton administration, and those who defend him/them to this day.
Trust me, if I can watch the movie after having served under that Commie SOB until '96, you can deal with it. It is important for all true conservatives to see it, as it is one of those movies like "Pvt. Ryan", in that it takes one about as close to combat as one can get without actually being there. Trust me, its well worth your time.

I know a lot of people assert that he was some kind of propagandist for Joe Stalin, but that's not the impression I get from watching his films.
If you look at the subtext of a film like "Alexander the Great", there are a lot of subversive messages inserted into the dialogue.
Personally, I don't have enough information about the man to pass judgment, but in my opinion, he seems to have a lot in common with Shostakovitch.
A "good" movie but the BEST book I ever read.
On the same mountain where I live.
You, m'dear, are allowed as many as you like...
manana...
Thanks for posting about the movie Battleground! I saw that movie in 1976 at the age of 9, and I've only seen it one time since. The second time I couldn't watch the whole thing due to having to be someplace, or something.
I have loved that movie for 28 years. Now I'm going to have to try and find it so I can see it again.
Battleground is a great WWII movie!
Waiting eagerly for your thoughts...
Agreed. But I'd add "Run Silent Run Deep" in place of Saving Private Ryan.
I was thinking the same thing, when I saw "From Here To Eternity" posted earlier. I have a hard time thinking of it, "Pearl Harbor", etc. as war flicks...they're more like goofy romance stories set during the war. To call them war movies, you'd have to consider "The Sound of Music" and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" in the group as well.

If you want to see a real war movie, check out the Harvey Keital film that documents-in not too historical a fashion, if you ask me-the Allies capture of the Enigma code used by German U-Boats.
Now that was a film!

I agree. I loved Where Eagles Dare. I saw the actual castle where it was filmed, in Austria. My uncle died in Bataan, in 1942, and my woman was born to the southeast of Bataan, in Batangas Province.
I'll try to find some more worthwhile WWII films in the meantime.
I forgot about run Silent. I'd add it to my list, but I still enjoyed Private Ryan. Watching Patton right now.
I wish I could find similar information about my father, who fought in New Guinea and on Leyte Is. He went MIA on Christmas 1944 and was later hopitalized from Jan 45 until April 46. He died in 1958 when I was 5, so I never got to talk to him about his war experiences.
