WHY IRAQ IS BECOMING VIETNAM

Why Iraq Is Becoming Vietnam

Liberals have long dreamed of turning our occupation of Iraq into another Vietnam, a scar on the face of America that they could revel in. I believe in many ways, they are succeeding.

Their latest victory is their success in turning incidents of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison into an indictment of American foreign policy and the President. Our Defense Secretary was dragged before a motley group of Senatorial inquisitors, many of whom don’t have the moral standing to tie his shoe, much less interrogate him.

The “scandal” is the Mai Lai massacre to this generation of liberals, and it reaches them like manna from heaven. They are hoping it is the turning point that allows them to toss dirt onto our Iraqi operation. It follows close on the heels of the Fallujah debacle, where America flinched instead of laying down the boot on crazy cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his band of fanatical thugs.

America essentially let human scum get away with murdering our countrymen and desecrating their bodies on worldwide TV. Everyone knew the appropriate response would be to cordon off the city, allow the innocent to escape, and liquidate the terrorists. But we didn’t have the will to follow through, fearing the world would view too many civilian casualties on TV.

The failure cannot be blamed on liberals. After all, they’re not failing—they’re succeeding. It is the decent people of America who are suffering the failure of will. Our president is guilty of the same.

President George W. Bush has proven himself to be a very capable war president, but an uneven president in non-war matters. The reason is that he correctly perceived a need in war to do whatever it took to prevail. But once the hot war was finished in Iraq, he began to filter his decisions through the prism of political consideration. That is a recipe for failure.

When will we learn, I wonder. Vietnam was a humiliating defeat. Not because it was an immoral war, as liberals like to say, but because we failed to let the troops win due to political considerations. Iraq is no different. The Marines could have subdued Fallujah in days, if not hours, if they were given a free hand.

What has all of this political consideration gotten for Mr. Bush and for America? We are so worried about the “Arab street” and what they will think about everything. To hell with the Arab street! The Arab street are the same people who cheered on 9-11.

It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that America is a decent nation, and that terrorists are evil. When wrongdoing is found on our side, it is an anomaly. With terrorists it is their modus operandi. Yet CNN and their ilk continue to produce pieces spotlighting America’s errors in war, and not the daily routine of our bloodthirsty enemies.

President Bush had it right when he long ago called Iraq, Iran, and North Korea the “axis of evil.” We would have done well to quickly move as needed against these enemies. But indecision, weakness, and lack of preparation have caused the Iraq campaign to languish. Its overall slowness is killing whatever support and goodwill the administration may have had for future campaigns.

On September 11th, 2001, fanatical terrorists made clear that they had declared war on us. This would be a war of annihilation—either theirs or ours—there was no third solution.

Currently we have the world’s terrorists right where we want them—coming to us in Iraq. Would we prefer they come back to New York City. Or perhaps Los Angeles, or Chicago?

Are we naïve enough to think that if we walk away from Iraq, we won’t be followed home? That the world’s terrorists won’t correctly gather that we are running away with our tail between our legs? Look what happened when we left Vietnam—mass graves and lost prestige.

Lack of will was our true enemy in Vietnam. We must exorcize this demon, or we will be condemned to repeat history.

The difference to me seems to be a clearer vision of whats going on, whats at stake. I guess I'm older and wiser now. It just seems to me we are choosing sides of this spiritual battle that has been raging. It is so much clearer now, except for when we on the right side doubt ourselves, weaken.

The implication that "liberals" and "decent people" are mutually exclusive categories demonstrates the moral compass of a six-year-old.

Let me see if I can guess what you are...

"I keep having this recurring thought: that we should pull out, see what happens and then go back in."

Interesting...Let them kill each other! They will do this for sure. They should beg us to stay!

Do you think halting the insurgency in Iraq will make a dent in global terrorism? If anything, the continuing occupation increases a sense of hatred against Americans. Whether we "walk away" or not (the eventual outcome is likely a bit more complex), terrorism continues to be a threat

This is America, home of the American revolution. We fought the greatest country on earth at that time. We aren't easily intimidated. We are not alone...unless we back down from our duty.

thanks for the ping abigail2...that's a really clear article. I was watching a little of cnn tonight and it was as though it was written by our enemies in Iraq. All about the small amount of bad and no news about all of the good our soldiers are doing and the appreciation of the Iraqis.

But going in and demolishing the city is not in our best interests at this point in time. If there are other ways of doing this without smoking the place, we should try that.

I don't know my friend. Having this Mexican standoff in Fallujah, sending in Iraqi patrols all make America look weak. It strengthens the position of Al-Sadr.

Whereas it is not Vietnam yet, it is on the road to becoming one. In a year since the war’s end, we have done little to quell the uprising. Most of this is politics. We have essentially let the perpetrators of the Fallujah incident to get away unpunished. That is not a comforting thought. Bush should have been demanding apologies from other after that and allowed the marines to assault the city. Every city in Iraq these days seem to be a holy city. If the Iraqis use holy cities as defensive cities, then they are fair targets. The Geneva conventions allow to bomb religious institutions if they are being used for military purposes.

Give it your best shot...

There are decent people of every stripe. If you are conservative and your child identifies as liberal, do they become "indecent"? Decency is based on your actions, not on whose name you check on a ballot box. If you can't see that, you are living in a dream world.

The “scandal” is the Mai Lai massacre . . .

I assume Mr. Rooney is talking about "My Lai."

Teapot Dome, Watergate, Whitewater and Chinagate were "scandals." My Lai was a massacre. There was a subsequent cover-up. The cover-up took place at the highest level of the Americal Division Hq. The Division CG, Asst. CG, and, I believe, the Chief of Staff, all were demoted one grade and retired. McNamara should have had the courage to resign at the time of the Peers Investigation.

The American Jury is still out on Secretary Rumsfeld. I don't believe the American voter will stand for the full responsibility of what happened at the Iraqi prison to be shouldered by a few Enlisted men and women.

It is absolutely true that America has a long and noble history of battling oppression. However, fighting terrorism is not like fighting an oppressive state. I honestly wish it were. Being stern and not backing down simply isn't enough. In fact, it could make the situation worse.

Well as it stands now the 'Jury" is in favor of Rummy to the tune of 70%. Now, I would ask you this? What "training" is required for 7 adults in the military to know that taking S/M photos of prisoners for their own enjoyment is the wrong thing to do? That is assuming that was the case. The other scenario is, if this was an actual MI operation to get urgent battlefield intelligence, what is the reason for “outrage” in the first place?

Time for confessions...I was liberal when I was young. I had alot of hate as a result of a pretty dysfunctional family life and was prey to being brainwashed in college. I didn't realize I hated America, but I did! I was not a decent person. I was a confused and easily manipulated person. I thought I was 'different'!! LOL!

The answer is obvious but there is a thing we call the "Chain of Command" that is responsible for seeing that those implied standards are complied with.
