Early Returns for Toomey/Specter Race (Exit Polling)
National Review Magazine ^ | April 27, 2004 | Katherine Jean Lopez-Asst. Editor National Review

MESSAGE OF THE AFTERNOON/EVENING TO PENNSYLVANIA CONSERVATIVES

Get out and vote Toomey.

I am kind of surprised about the reports that US Rep. Toomey seems to be carrying Lancaster County by a slim margin, 52-48

Toomey needs to rack up a good margin in Lancaster County, so that he can afford to bleed a little on Specter turf in Philly.

So if youre a Penn. Republican, quit reading the Corner and go vote Toomey.

Toomey also needs huge margins in York and Harrisburg to offset anticipated Specter wins in the Philly surburbs.

Pfft. The "the rightist will energize the base!" argument was also used by people who were saying that we should vote for...uh, what was his name? McClintock or somebody like that?

The Toomey/Specter battle is going to give the Dems lots of ammo, that's all I'm saying.

Now if we could only get JimRob to get rid of the "Tolkien" libs!!!

The libs may try to embrace Tolkein, but he was an Inkling. He recognized the fight between good and evil. He chose and promoted the right side of that battle.

Tolkein would recognize the "orks" in this battle.

Having said that, Freepers aren't Hobbits. We're Rangers!

You should have looked at her/him and asked,"Are you sure I can trust you to be honest in your duties here?"

Was 'pfft' the sound of you sticking your head up your ass? There was no parallel Presidential race going on during the California gubernatorial election, so your comparison means NOTHING.

Who would Specter have had to answer to if Toomey hadn't run?

The best info we've been getting is from NRO, who seem to be implying a Toomey win (as if they have embargoed polling data).

One of the NRO crew is predicting Toomey 51 Specter 48.

My Prediction still stands

Spector 53%
Toomey 47%

BUSH and RICK .S support = SPECTOR WINS !

LATEST PA poll :

Harrisburg, PA) – April 27, 2004 – George W. Bush and John Kerry are deadlocked 42% to 42% in a test election among Pennsylvania registered voters, according to the latest IssuesPA/Pew Poll. Independent Ralph Nader now attracts 5 percent support in the Keystone State. Eleven percent are undecided or prefer someone else.

Princeton Survey Research Associates International (PSRAI) conducted the poll for IssuesPA, the non-partisan statewide awareness project focused on raising the issues most critical to Pennsylvania’s economic future. Funding for the survey was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

The Toomey/Specter battle is going to give the Dems lots of ammo, that's all I'm saying.

What you are saying is absolutely nothing, it is intellectually vacuous arguing at best; that a primary battle is going to be divisive for a general election?

Really? Shocking! Tell us more, while you are at it, tell me why all those Dobsonites that are turning out are going to vote for the most outspoken proabort Republican in the Senate so he can have the honor of deciding on Judicial nominees?

Whether or not Snarlin is successful in hanging on in the primary, he has burned up his $10 million warchest and is finished in the general election. Clearly he needs to spend money to get votes, paying student $75 a day to "volunteer" while Toomey gets them for free. Why would a Kerry supporter vote to keep the GOP in the majority in the Senate? These are things that just don't pass the smell test. If I was a Dem there's no way I would want the GOP to control the Senate.

Your line of thinking is plagued with fear, and makes little sense when you get into it. I don't think you have thought it all out yet and ask you do.

The GOP base will be much more disaffected with Specter should he pull this out as well...he'd have to respond by running on issues to win their support that he would need to win in November.

Just curious. Will the fact of the closeness of this race perhaps bring some pressure to bear on Specter if he wins? Wouldn't he have to acknowledge the conservatism of his constituents if they vote for Toomey in such large numbers?

You should move to Potter County. When I voted this morning, the count was Republicans-15 'Rats-3. Only one district in all of Potter County went for Gore in 2000.

It would also mean someone nearly as obstructionist as Leahy would not be in charge of Judicary for the next two years.

Yeah, Orin Hatch.

Hatch would be the second coming of Ed Meese compared to Specter.

Specter is *that* bad.

He is so bad, in fact, that I would, I think rather have a Democratic Senate without Spectre than a Republican Senate with him.

Uh, this is pretty much conventional wisdom, and if you are challenging a basic fact about politics, I wonder about the rest of your analysis.
