I agree with you that Edwards would be the most likely replacement. I also agree that he would be a much more challenging opponent for Bush.

IF Edwards is shoved in at the last minute, AND Dems think from some initial polling that Edwards actually has a chance, then I would not be surprised at all to see Hillary suddenly drafted to the VP spot. While I tend to agree that they're ready to wait till 2008, I think sometimes we tend to (understandably) overestimate liberal patience sometimes. They're quite patient in establishing their agendas, but not really all that patient on a personal level when it comes to achieving power. The scenario I just described may indeed be the plan to get Hillary back in in 2004.
