He probably tripped and fell on a piece of schrapnel, picked it up and off he was to the Medic.....
I really hate to tell a family secret....but one of my uncles got a purple heart. He went back to get the coffee pot and....got shot in the butt!!!!!!! He did something stupid and got a medal for it besides.

"Shrapnel in left arm above elbow. Shrapnel removed and appl bacitracin dressing. Ret to Duty." I commend ALL Veterans for their service, regardless of where or when they served.
But not knowing Purple Heart protocol, I do have to ask, is getting a SLIVER truly a war injury? I mean, this didn't even require a steri-strip, or a stitch, but barely a band-aid. I have had worse paper cuts.

"Shrapnel in left arm above elbow. Shrapnel removed and appl bacitracin dressing. Ret to Duty." No expert on war wounds - but shouldn't shapnel be moving fast enough to require more than bacitracin? How can shapnel lodge so close to the surface that mere bacitracin (no stitches, etc) suffice?
Sounds to me like a SPLINTER.
Sorry - but only a pansy would accept a Purple Heart for this! (Please forgive the insult to those alternative lifestyle folks with courage...can't come up with a term to describe someone like this)

F-ing Kerry should be required to drop his pants so photos can be taken of the horrendous scars left on his rear end and elsewhere on his body where wounds were claimed.
Then the photos should be posted on the internet to stop all of this sniping once and for all.

DU is worried that Kerry is blowing it. They call it a stupid mistake to go on MTP and say "it's all available and we want people to come and look at it", then they have to turn away a Boston Globe reporter the next day. It is looking like Kerry was an opportunist to get both into and out of the war, in his quest to be the next 'JFK'. I predict that his records are going to be the main subject of the Sunday shows. I think this is going to big. The polls have the Liberals worried enough to where if Kerry cant get out of this one, the chant for Hillary will begin.

Meehan said although Kerry could have asked to stay in Vietnam, it was the Navy's decision to request that he be reassigned. Kerry left the country in early April 1969. Kerry had to initiate the request, not the Navy. It was the Navy's decision whether to approve the request or not. We need all the service records including those while in the Reserves. We need an explanation about his military status during the period 1970-1. If Kerry continues to leak out the records little by little and raise more questions, it should only increase the demand for more information. We should also push for Teresa's tax returns.

Thousands of men could have put in for purple hearts with these wounds, but didn't. I would bet thousands suffered more and still didn't get purple hearts, but then they didn't have an agenda. I loathe Kerry.

I honestly don't care about J. F'n K.'s medals or spliter scars. I want to see what his commanders had to say about him... and you can bet those reports will never be released.

Interesting that all three Purple Hearts were signed on the same date in August.

I am overjoyed by this, because no one has a good defense against ridicule.
I suspect that Leno and Letterman are going to be having a little fun with John Kerry's ass-wound tonight. Many who have blindly considered Kerry a 'war-hero' are going to reevaluate when they discover that for two splinters and a chunk of hot metal in his ass, he got to leave when many with worse injuries remained in country.

Do you think your friend would have used a paper cut as an excuse to go home?

If we pretend to believe Kerry's constant dodging of this issue, what does it say about the effectiveness of a US Senator who cannot obtain complete documentation about his own military service from the DoD?
Perhaps the inability to obtain complete records such as those covering his first PH, means that this medal slipped through the cracks. Remember - he REQUESTED that the first PH be awarded to him. This is unheard of before Kerry and (hopefully) since.

Yeah, Kerry will turn over 'some' medical records. Like Saddam allowed the inspection of 'some' suspected WMD sites.
