U.S. declares War on Porn

WASHINGTON -- Lam Nguyen's job is to sit for hours in a chilly, quiet room devoid of any color but gray and look at pornography. This job, which Nguyen does earnestly from 9 to 5, surrounded by a half-dozen other "computer forensic specialists" like him, has become the focal point of the Justice Department's operation to rid the world of porn.

In this field office in Washington, 32 prosecutors, investigators and a handful of FBI agents are spending millions of dollars to bring anti-obscenity cases to courthouses across the country for the first time in 10 years. Nothing is off limits, they warn, even soft-core cable programs such as HBO's long-running Real Sex or the adult movies widely offered in rooms of major hotel chains.

Department officials say they will send "ripples" through an industry that has proliferated on the Internet and grown into an estimated $10 billion-a-year colossus profiting Fortune 500 corporations such as Comcast, which offers hard-core movies on a pay-per-view channel.

Actually porn is violence against those it exploits.

Enter the feminazis.

Yes adultary is bad and yes it is impossible to police and yes I don't want the government in that business

Hardcore porn could be considered just another form of adultery.

It wouldn't take much money at all to police it,

Are you kidding me? Are you going to have the government/police monitor everybody's internet connection? Because guess what, it can be made in someone's home in England and made available on a site in Germany, where it can be downloaded by anybody in America. Heck, it could be made in someone's home here in the US and put on sites overseas for people here to download.

Why is this thought so repulsive to people who are not porn users?

Because not all of us think it's bad. I think it's another form of adultery as I said, and that is a religious belief I hold, and I would not want to force it upon anybody else. Like I said, it's very un-American.

But I have to wonder why people would argue against such a simple thing except for an irrational fear that making porn illegal would lead to the Taliban.

Because it would open the door to even more government intrusion, and the fact that you are on FR tells me you probably know that once government gets a little power, it doesn't stop there, it'll keep trying to get more power.

It has more to do with the breakdown of family and community, the destruction of traditions and the concept of family and personal honor,

This does more harm to this nation than any amount of porn could ever do.

But, why is it so hard to imagine the easy and cost effectiveness of simply saying that all hard core porn is now illegal. It wouldn't take much money at all to police it

What color is the sky on your planet?

Because not all of us think it's bad.

And even some of those who do think it's bad know that force (governmental or otherwise) should be used only to prevent or punish acts that violate the liberties of others.

If porn is coming into my neighbor's house that impacts directly on me and my children.

Wow, that's the same argument that the anti-gun folks try to use against us, and it's the same argument Joe Lieberman tries to use when saying the government should be involved in what we watch on TV or play in video games.

Seriously, if your that worried about your neighbors, don't allow your children to go over there.

If you can't control your children, that is your problem, not mine or the government's, for that matter.

You and woman-hating fundamentalist Muslims have something in common. In Islam, a woman should conform to the dress code, including head coverings. However, it is the woman's choice whether to do so, as her decision is an issue purely between her and her god. Even her husband cannot force her to wear that stuff, although trying to convince her is allowed. However, you have these theocratic fundies who believe they have the right to declare not wearing proper attire is a sin that can be punished in this world.
They are usurping God's/Allah's role in punishing sin. So are you.

*** DING DING DING *** No more calls; we have a winner!

If they were "screwed up", the availability of porn simply pushed them into commiting crimes.

In Germany you can see bare breasts on the billboards, and what is allowed on regular TV is a lot more explicit than what is found in the United States. There are also a lot of porn shops, one of which is a large chain with hundreds or thousands of shops, and they apparently have these little booths with videos in the back. Many gas stations also have hard core porn magazines right there at the checkout counter -- not even back behind the counter. Strip clubs are common, and so are clubs where much more than stripping happens. Nudity is common at the public swimming pools. Prostitution is legal and large brothels exist.

Yet somehow the rape rate in the United States is four times higher than that in Germany. Personally, I think our puritanical repression of sexuality is at least partially responsible for our higher instance of rape.

Here in CR Ia, girls in middle school who are at most 14 are giving hummers for money.
I have honestly never heard that term. Is it what I think it means?

If you think it means what Monica gave Bill, you're right.

I do agree that his neighbor has a governmentally enforceable obligation to lower his blinds when watching porn.

There was a case of that being enforced recently, when a guy was watching a porn DVD in his car. I can't imagine being the parent of my young girls, driving past his car. The explaining I'd have to do...

Porn violates men too and children along with females...actually there are women who traffic in porn and they are just as reprehensible as the men. This is not a feminazi issue. Most feminazis are firmly supportive of porn industries. Get your facts straight.

This is not a feminazi issue. Most feminazis are firmly supportive of porn industries. Get your facts straight.

Just talk to Katherine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin, the lead feminazis in the country, what they think about porn. These people think even private sex within marriage is abuse of power verging on rape. They have rallied hard against porn, so much that it was embarassing when Dworkin's somewhat explicit feminazi manifesto was declared to be porn when entering Canada and siezed by Canadian customs.

Okay, so you think porn is bad, and you can have that personal opinion, but that Ashcroft's crusade is futile and expensive. What were we arguing about?

Germany!? Did you say Germany? Porn permeates that society and that would be enough but lots of the garbage is sent out all over the world especially to the US.

Furthermore, your facts are incorrect. In fact, no one knows the extent of brutality that occurs in Germany. The Netherlands and other European countries like Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium do not regulate the porn industry and do not REPORT sex crimes like the U.S. does -- i.e., incest, date rape, sex with underage participants, public nudity, and even pedophile activity. In fact, there are publications in Europe that prominently promote pedophilia. Strip clubs are common in Germany and have been for many years. I remember seeing this on a trip in the 80's. I aso know that many many mostly young women are kidnapped and sold on the flesh markets of Germany and other western European markets mostly controlled by Muslim terorist funded and controlled Turkish and Albanian thugs.
