Whoah! I didn't have any interruption (same provider as FR, maybe, although I've been planning on switching). Some friends told me they couldn't access Free Republic last night (one with earthlink in CA) or this morning (one with rcn in PA).

If you run a Unix system there and want free DNS help in the future, I'll leave an e-mail with you. I ran nameservers up through the first bind 8. Is the FR nameserver up for everyone now, or propagating in that direction?

Why did this happen in the first place? it was by luck that I found out about the "back door" to FR.

Well, I'll copy John Robinson's note/update on the Yahoo! FR Group site:

Apparently at fault is a single incorrect phone number on the "Registrant" record. Of three methods of contact for each of four contact positions on the domain, GKG.net choose to disable the domain because of a single piece of incorrect information, just one of five distinct units of contact information. GKG.net made no apparent attempt to use any of the other (all valid) contacts to alert us before taking the drastic action they did. I'm very disappointed in GKG.net and this policy.

Furthermore, once a domain is locked for invalid information, it (or any other domains owned) may not be modified by the owner. An absurd practice.

I have that Yahoo! Group site on my FAVORITES so when server problems strike FR, I can go there and find out what is going on. I seek posts by John or Jim Robinson, or post a note asking what the problem is so I can find out.

No interruption with a Unix system? Did you already have host mapping directly to a numeric FR address?

Did Yahoo ask you for a credit card before you could sign in and post there? They did me, and I declined so I can not post.

"Apparently at fault is a single incorrect phone number on the "Registrant" record."

It appears to me that the opposition has found a negligible flaw and is exploiting it.

...don't know if I got Jim's username right there, but tell him it looks like a competition attack. I run a site. Recently, the left is attacking our sites by looking for flaws and reporting those flaws not only to providers and hosts, but to search engine admins., registrars, etc.

I run a socially conservative site that's rough on the opposition (although new and small) and use godaddy.com. The only attacks I've even had to do anything about were blocks for competition bots (link checkers, cloak checkers, lawsuit bots, etc.,...) in the webserver .htaccess files, and other bots that are redirected to the site in hordes.

"Did you already have host mapping directly to a numeric FR address?"

No, I didn't. ...don't even have a DNS cache here for now. I ran most services until 2000 and now reside where high feed is not reasonably available. It's remote hosting, for now. But I do use the same provider as FR if what someone wrote earlier in this thread is true (will send a more private message about that). ...even wondered if some A records with the provider might be causing the FR DNS problem because of that, but I just saw the message about the registrar.

...dirty, nasty! We've been seeing more dirty tricks directed at socially conservative family rights sites from them, lately.

That was for the interim time between the point the .com addy went down and JohnRob enabled the logon cookie to be set while using the IP address.

In any case .com is back for Milwaukee-area RoadRunner customers.

Don't even think about blaming me for this one. I was doing laundry.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Did you have to use the backdoor at all? I'm on through the usual route now, but I came through the back for about 24 hours.

LOL! I was less productive when FR was down yesterday than when it's working. Kept checking if it was back up, or how best to access it every 5 minutes yesterday.

I actually got some work done yesterday. Quite a bit, in fact.

Today was quite different. ;)
