Woman kills intruder
By CLAIRE BUSHEY, News-Sun Staff Writer
A Springfield woman shot and killed a 21-year-old man early Sunday, reportedly after the victim and a companion broke into her Chestnut Avenue home, police said.
Matthew J. Marino, 21, whose address was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center at 3:45 a.m., Springfield police Lt. Michael Hill said. Officers found Marino lying on the driveway at 346 Chestnut Ave. with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.
Hill said investigators were interviewing several people Sunday night in connection with the shooting and planned to execute a few search warrants.
"We anticipate charging another person we believe is involved in this," he said.
Springfield police received a call at 2:50 a.m. from Melany Yancey, 49, of the Chestnut Avenue address, Hill said. She told them that while she was home alone, two men wearing bandannas kicked in her front door and came upstairs.
Yancey told police she sealed herself in her bedroom, but the two men tried to break in. She took her .40-caliber handgun and fired a shot in the direction of the door, she said, and someone fired back.
Yancey reportedly said she heard the intruders move into the bedroom of one of her two adult sons, neither of whom were at home. She ran out of the room, attempting to escape, and fired two rounds at the intruders, she said. One of bullets hit Marino.
Yancey told police she ran to a neighbor's house where she dialed 911.
Hill said police had not found the gun reportedly carried by the intruders, but officers did find a shell casing from a weapon other than Yancey's handgun.
Police did not expect to charge Yancey with any crime, Hill said.

Burglary and robbery are very different crimes.
Agreed. I just don't stipulate any difference between the consequences of the two behaviors. If someone breaks into someone else's home - burglary or robbery, to me it makes no difference. The homeowner is not obligated to inquire of the perpetrators their intent.

When the land was largely unsettled and maps were first being drawn, it was common to mark where a spring had been found as water is so necessary to the traveler; I guess a spring field would be a pleasant green place along a dusty day's journey.
6 1/2 minutes on today's Cryptoquote, no pencil :)

Robbery, Burglary, and Breaking & Entering are all three are different crimes. These thugs committed first degree burglary. (Entering an occupied residence at night.)
An unoccupied building is Breaking & Entering.
Robbery is forcably taking anothers possesions.
This could be classified as Home Invasion but not robbery.

I'm thinking of putting an anti-gun sign in my front yard - so that criminals will want to stop by. Hmm, and of course I'd have to somehow create a situation in which I have other way out of the house except through the victims (heh).

Yancey told police she sealed herself in her bedroom, but the two men tried to break in. She took her .40-caliber handgun and fired a shot in the direction of the door, she said, and someone fired back. Good for her. Not only was she armed, but she was armed with something that is designed to make a difference in -- not to menting shortening the horizon of -- the target's future plans.

Ditto on naming the state, ....but $10 says there isn't a current Springfield, Alaska.

There is at least one Springfield in each of the 50 states. (Producers of the Simsons know this.) Alabama has several. Please indicate the state, OK? For this reason, I try to indicate the state somewhere in my posts, either in the title or in the name of the newspaper. In this case, for example, I might have used the name "Springfield [OH] News-Sun" rather than just "Springfield News-sun"

Not minutia. This is a local story on a national website. Those interested in the story will want to know where the incident took place without having to go on a treasure hunt to figure it out.
It was just a suggestion.

Putting an anti-gun sign in front of your house to attract home invaders would be baiting. This isn't allowed in hunting.
You could get a $50 fine.

I like how the reporterette, Claire Bushy, refers to the 2 perpetrators as "the victim and his companion". Companion??? How about "the two alleged assailants"? Also, the use of ".....reportedly after". Like it is a question that she might have shot him outside, staged a break-in, and dragged him inside? Who is the freeper that posts the quote about typewriters being dangerous weapons? This is a perfect example.

Do you think the vultures or the fire ants will get you first? (With apologies to "Matthew Quigley", whose question involved Dingos and ants).
