Woman kills intruder
By CLAIRE BUSHEY, News-Sun Staff Writer
A Springfield woman shot and killed a 21-year-old man early Sunday, reportedly after the victim and a companion broke into her Chestnut Avenue home, police said.
Matthew J. Marino, 21, whose address was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center at 3:45 a.m., Springfield police Lt. Michael Hill said. Officers found Marino lying on the driveway at 346 Chestnut Ave. with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.
Hill said investigators were interviewing several people Sunday night in connection with the shooting and planned to execute a few search warrants.
"We anticipate charging another person we believe is involved in this," he said.
Springfield police received a call at 2:50 a.m. from Melany Yancey, 49, of the Chestnut Avenue address, Hill said. She told them that while she was home alone, two men wearing bandannas kicked in her front door and came upstairs.
Yancey told police she sealed herself in her bedroom, but the two men tried to break in. She took her .40-caliber handgun and fired a shot in the direction of the door, she said, and someone fired back.
Yancey reportedly said she heard the intruders move into the bedroom of one of her two adult sons, neither of whom were at home. She ran out of the room, attempting to escape, and fired two rounds at the intruders, she said. One of bullets hit Marino.
Yancey told police she ran to a neighbor's house where she dialed 911.
Hill said police had not found the gun reportedly carried by the intruders, but officers did find a shell casing from a weapon other than Yancey's handgun.
Police did not expect to charge Yancey with any crime, Hill said.

The extreme anti-gun slant JUMPS right out on the first sentence.
Listen...
SHE WAS THE VICTIM not the person that she shot. Idiots in the press.

Couple of things:
STOOOOOOOPID PRESS! no bias here! not "victim becomes non-victim by defending herself" or "intruder shot by armed citizen"......no, we get this drek!
"A Springfield woman shot and killed a 21-year-old man early Sunday, reportedly after the victim and a companion broke into her Chestnut Avenue home, police said."
Next, kudos to the efficacy of the .40 liberty cartridge! even with an abdominal shot, the guy ended up daid! That is a pretty forgiving set of terminal ballistics.
And finally, since this made the press, will it be included ing the 2.5 million per year defensive use of a firearm for the year? Guns Save Lives!
Good for you Madame! God's speed, and we all hope the get your .40 pistol back to you in good time. If not, acquire another firearm (sell your second cloak)!
Cheers,

The town is Springfield Ohio, not Massachusetts or Illinois....and the homeowner should thank God for that. This situation is bad enough without the absurdity of going to jail for defending yourself with a pistol (see Willamette, IL).

Yep! She shot and killed them as they were reportedly in her home. No bias here!

What the woman went through will be with her for awhile. Prayers that she has peace and quiet and will feel safe in her future.

The other suspect was heard to yell "D'oh" and was last seen ducking into Moe's Tavern......

It is helpful on these local news stories to give the state in (parens) in the headline... There are many place names and newspaper names that are similar in many areas. It surprises me how many newspapers don't identify the state they are in in an obvious way.

There is at least one Springfield in each of the 50 states. (Producers of the Simsons know this.) Alabama has several. Please indicate the state, OK?

Good job Lady!
Stupid thugs, hung around even after knowing she had a gun, and a big gun.
She really kept herself together. Impressive.
As she ran past her sons room where they were at it sounds like she turned sideways and took a couple of luck shots at them on her way out. (or was it luck)
I love this story. And I hope this brave woman gets over the trauma of what was forced upon her.
By the way, crappy reporting calling the intruders victims...it cant be said enough.

I recall doing a web search of some kind (I think at US Geodetic Survey Site) and came away with the impression that there was, in fact, at least one Springfield in each state. Go check.

Burglary and robbery are very different crimes. These guys were armed robbers and very dangerous. Don't equate them to burglars who only break in when no one is home.
