[history]
February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

Here is what alarmed me (and one of the posters checks FR, so I don't feel so guilty about "borrowing"- we need all the insights we can get.

Reply re: PT replies to Gadsden question
Thanks for the response, PT. I agree that the time is drawing close.
I just read this morning over on the FR Threat Matrix thread that:
1) Chinese troops in the Fujian province have gone on high alert.
2) Nato is conducting an anti-submarine exercise in the Mediteranean.
3) The Navy is conducting an exercise with three carrier strike groups.
4) Some sort of nationwide exercise called Unified Defense 04 'which will involve hundreds of people from more than 60 federal, state and local agencies nationwide'.
5) Bush signed an EO authorizing the interdiction of ships in Cuban territorial waters.
Add to this list the recent Russian exercises, Putin dismissing his government prior to the elections, Al Zawahiri threatening new attacks, and the rumor of Norad on high alert and it feels like we are, as Kerodin suggested, moving into a tactical phase.
P.S. 5) is incorrect. The EO authorizes interdiction of ships in US territorial waters that might be going into Cuban territorial waters. Still interesting.
Gulp.

Reply short range missiles
this might be a false alarm on my part after having read the EO. I thought the EO had different wording on boat travel.
A couple of years ago there was a report leaked about an unidentified "rogue" nation that was discovered to be equiping small ocean-going vessels with short range ballistic missiles. The country went unidentified but a certain congressman stated very plainly that US citizens would be very concerned to learn who was doing this.
I learned by accident that the country in question might be Castro's

Were they hiding Michael Jackson ? :)
Seriously, I imagine they have all kinds of goodies stored in/under those mosques.

Why am I not surprised.
I did the Cuba search, because all of a sudden it dawned on me that Cuba maybe the "Island" that keeps turning up in the threats.
One way to test and find out how serious it is, is to offer the clintons a weekend in Cuba, see if they go. After all they think it is better than America.

Q&A: Outsourcing Jobs
Published: February 21, 2004
From the Council on Foreign Relations, February 21, 2003
What's the debate over outsourcing?
Shifting jobs to lower-wage countries--a form of what is known as offshore outsourcing--is an increasingly popular practice among U.S. businesses seeking to cut operating costs. Outsourcing has also become political shorthand for presidential candidates to describe what is perceived as unfair international trade and its costs for U.S. workers. The issue has become highly emotional because of outsourcing's two dramatically different effects: it leads to layoffs and dislocations for thousands of U.S. workers, even as most economists say it will ultimately strengthen the U.S. economy.

It is not surprising that he is upset with us, if we lost ten of our men, they must have lost a 100 or more of theirs.
It would never dawn on him, that we love and honor our military, not if he is listening to the news creeps and commie anti-Americans spout off.
I wish that I could give a hug to every one of our boys and girls, who give so much for us. Will settle for prayers.

Health Officials put Taco Bell Patrons on Alert for Hepatitis A Symptoms (Concord, NH)
By HOLLY RAMER
The Associated Press
2/27/2004, 4:51 p.m. ET
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) Thousands of people who ate at a Taco Bell in New Hampshire are being urged to watch for signs of hepatitis A after a restaurant employee was diagnosed with the liver infection.
New Hampshire health officials said Friday that anyone who ate at the restaurant between Feb. 7 and Feb. 21 should call their doctors if they experience symptoms including fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, dark urine or yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Officials said those who ate at the restaurant between Feb 15. and Feb. 21 also should consider receiving an injection of immune globulin, a treatment that greatly lessens the chances of acquiring the disease but is only effective if given within two weeks of exposure.

An Afghanistan diplomat visiting the US for the first time was being wined and dined by the State Department. The diplomat was not used to the salt in American foods (French fries, cheeses, salami, anchovies, etc.) and was constantly sending his manservant Abdul to fetch him a glass of water.
Time and again, Abdul would scamper off and return with a glass of water, but then came the time when he returned empty handed. "Abdul, you son of an ugly camel, where is my water?" demanded the diplomat.
"A thousand pardons, O Illustrious One," stammered the wretched Abdul,
