THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (A HIT OR A MISS?).. Live thread!Contrary to popular media pronouncements, the first of the commercial showing of this long awaited, landmark, and controversial film has already debuted and the misconceptions that the fate of this endeavor hangs in the balance.. That is HOGWASH.. The Passion of the Christ is on the brink of a record breaking opening, in spite of the limited available screens, and the all out, and outragous efforts on the part of the National Media's near unanimous rejection, and the Hollywood establishment roadblocks to stymie this motion picture and it's brilliant and courageous director/producer..
I just receive a call from friends that attended a church sponsored midday showing of the movie with more than 850 of their fellow flock. The collective response was "it was sobering and breathtaking, and they existed with a profound feeling of moral inadequacy".
I toyed with the idea of accepting an invitation to book a private showing at a local theater for this weekend, however after calling a few local churches to help fill the seats I discovered that all (I call 12) of the parishes and neighborhood churches had already secured their own private dates with sellout crowds.. Every one of them had sold the seats within a day of their announcements... I just may book a threater in three weeks for all of my friends and family, that wish to watch it again, and again..

Carlo, I'm relieved to see people finally posting about this movie because since I saw the pre-screening in January, I haven't had anybody to talk to about it. (Hubby hasn't seen it yet.)
Guess what? This movie continues to "percolate" within us. It's been a month and in some ways for me, it's even more awesome. And I've decided to see it again. There's so much to get my mind around in this film, I ......will see it again.
Thanks for the thread and I will continue to read with great interest the opinions of those who actually see the movie. Those that don't see it and yet criticize, or those who only want to argue in non-constructive manners, I will continue to ignore.

There's so much to get my mind around in this film, I I know what you mean, it has been replaying over and over.. parts of the movie in a kind of a loop.. This wasn't a violent movie in the pop-culture kind of way we have been made to endure lately.. it was painful, gripping and so very sad.. I am struggling with the correct words to articulate my feeling.. perhaps everyone needs to find their own way..
I hope they see it.. one thing is absolutely sure..THE NAYSAYERS WERE WRONG, only a tormented bigot, will leave the theater with hate in their hearts, and a BUGS BUNNY CARTOON would start their engine..

We also saw the movie last night. Our church bought 1000 tickets that sold out in 5 days.
The movie was totally awesome. We sat speechless at the end, and could hardly discuss it for an hour.
It is brutal, yes, but not gratuitously or excessively. It is also the most passionate love story, and the most beautifully filmed movie I have seen in ages. I will be seeing it again. But not today.
Two words for Mel Gibson.
Thank You.

I have my tickets for Wednesday.. A FLOOD COULDN'T KEEP ME AWAY!It's raining enough for a flood here in north Texas, but I've got tickets for 6:15pm today!
On another thread, Carlo, I read that it was recommended for all that could, to go see it by this Saturday at the latest. Why? Because movies are called "box office hits" judging by the first week's sales.

have a private college showing tonight.....should be something else
I probably should not go (or be on here right now) due to tremendous amounts of projects and assignments due tomorrow, but seeing this will be worth an all-nighter.

You're right Carlo, there is nothing in this film like the pop-culture violence that we've all become so desensitized to.
Guy on news this morning was saying (in support of Passion) "where was the outrage about Texas Chainsaw Massacre?" And he's right. There are movies out there just as violent, just as graphic. BUT HAVE NO DEEPER MESSAGE OF LOVE!
And therein lies all the difference....
Sometimes I think we just need a ((((((hug)))))) after seeing this movie. :-)

carlo, you said you went with your boys. How old are they?
I have heard it probably isn't a good idea to take children under 13 because even though they have been brought up with the teachings that Christ died on the cross for us to actually see that horrible, horrible death could be traumatizing to young children.
So I would like to know the ages of your boys and what their reaction was.

One thing that has bugged me is how some people are distorting what Mel said about the Holy Spirit working thru him. Their words will be drowned out now that millions of viewers have the facts.. However it won't stop the opportunists from their agenda.. It's truly a time to rejoice..

If you know your Scriptures, that we need to see just how vile we are first to understand just how great Jesus Christ is, then yes, it is good.
Now, if you are a postmodern, lazy, ignorant, theologically stupid Christian like most in America these days, this will shock you as not being "conducive to good self-esteem." Well, Jesus isn't about self-esteem. He is about His glory.

I was planning on seeing it this morning (or hoping to - first showing 9:00 am), but when I mentioned it to hubby, he said, "what, you're going without me?" Now that surprised me. I didn't think he would want to see it. We're both catholic, but he's not particularly religious, we go to Mass together, but sometimes I think it's more for my benefit than his. So, I'm waiting to see it, but who knows when we'll be able to get tickets. Guess I'll have to buy from Fandango.

God doesn't just have the ability to choose, he does choose to work through people.....every single person in the world.
Even the wicked are used of God for his purposes.

Do you not read your Scripture? Do not engage in vain repetition, which Jesus Christ condemns as sinful.

I have a pretty mature 10 year old -- what do you think? He's seen the trailers and says he wants to see it.
