THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (It's here!!).. Live thread!

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (A HIT OR A MISS?).. Live thread!

Contrary to popular media pronouncements, the first of the commercial showing of this long awaited, landmark, and controversial film has already debuted and the misconceptions that the fate of this endeavor hangs in the balance.. That is HOGWASH.. The Passion of the Christ is on the brink of a record breaking opening, in spite of the limited available screens, and the all out, and outragous efforts on the part of the National Media's near unanimous rejection, and the Hollywood establishment roadblocks to stymie this motion picture and it's brilliant and courageous director/producer..

I just receive a call from friends that attended a church sponsored midday showing of the movie with more than 850 of their fellow flock. The collective response was "it was sobering and breathtaking, and they existed with a profound feeling of moral inadequacy".

I toyed with the idea of accepting an invitation to book a private showing at a local theater for this weekend, however after calling a few local churches to help fill the seats I discovered that all (I call 12) of the parishes and neighborhood churches had already secured their own private dates with sellout crowds.. Every one of them had sold the seats within a day of their announcements... I just may book a threater in three weeks for all of my friends and family, that wish to watch it again, and again..

I don't think anybody has been tortured for reading the Bible in several centuries. If anything, some Catholics (certainly not all) are mad at the Church for having the services in the vernacular rather than Latin in order to make it more accesable. Maybe you've heard of that?

"Tell that to the Catholic leadership. The Catholic Church had some interesting ways of torturing and burning people at the stake people for studying the Bible!(I have heard no apologies from the Vatican)"

MCH----There are other Catholics who post on FR who are scholars and can give you chapter and verse of apologies. I don't have my head in the sand. I am a student of the foibles, sins and hate perpetrated by people in the Catholic faith in our 2,000 year history. I have just finished reading Conversos, Inquisition, and the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain by Norman Roth. I have also read an older book, Torquemada by Sabatini and other works critical of the actions of people in the Church.

I don't have a quarrel with your questions and difficulty with Catholicism.....just the tone and underlying animosity that permeates your posts.

I wish I could remember the quote from St. Augustine.....but it has something to do with the purity of a sacrament not being diminshed by the sins of the person administering it.

If you think of truth as sunlight, it is not diminished just because we view it through a grimy window.

Pax.

I'll pray for you. I hope you will pray for me.

And Catholics will train exactly the same kind of "what you're calling a 'church' is leading to doom!" rhetoric back on you. Net result if we can't get past this: Much heat, no light. Much better than mutual denunciation of one another as liars is explanation of why one's claims should be viewed as true.

Look, I have no hatred for Roman Catholics. I do despise your practice of Maryolatry however. If you pray to a being you consider that being god-like. This is sacreligious. Blasphemous. I don't know how you can obey Christ, take communion, study the scriptures and still practice such an abomination. I shall never understand it.

I refuse to use that "slash sarcasm" thingy, because it defeats the purpose of sarcasm.

Yeah, kinda like a Darwinian entrance exam.

Got an email from a girlfriend of mine proclaiming this Wed. 2/25/04 GIRLS DAY OUT to see the opening of THE PASSION, I in turn emailed some friends to pass the word along. I bought 10 tickets and we are there for the first showing the first day.

Our church reserved 300 seats for the Senior High Youth Group. They are going this Sunday. First church, then pizza and then they are being bused to the nearby theater.

Yes Hollywood will regret this, but they still won't get it. They still won't get it......

Cobalt, I got trapped into this debate the other night. NOTHING you can say will deter the Catholic Bashers. About 30 of us were insisting and proving that Catholics DO NOT consider Mary a deity, nor do we pray TO her (or any Saint for that matter) but THROUGH her and the Bashers kept spewing the same nonsense over and over.

Others have said it, this thread is about the MOVIE, not the merits of one religion or another. Let's just focus on movie-related issues. I know this line was started by someone posting mean and hateful things, but that post has been pulled so let's all move on.

I just don't understand why those of us who have a special affinity for the Mother of God and hold her in high esteem are so reviled by those who claim to love her Son. FReegards! MCC

You're probably right. Regardless, I'll let it drop.

Roman Catholics pray for the intercession of Mary to champion a cause. Like one would go to one's mom instead of one's dad to get something.
Saints are the same, that's why they are Patron Saints.

However, being on the fringe of the RC church all my life, I find it troubling that you judge someone's relationship with God as harshly as you do. It is not your place to judge, only God's. By detesting the way a person finds that path, aren't you putting yourself on His level? I will not think myself righter than anyone else, only God knows if he finds this as evil as you do.

Sorry I got off track, this is about the movie and I am dead jealous that I have no ticket and no babysitter.

Here is a "Troll" question: When the Bible was being translated into English, What Religion hindered this project?

Here's a better one: Who surreptitiously signed his name to the King James Version?

When you put words in Catholics' mouths (serious Catholics, not cultural Catholics) it makes you look silly. And I say that as a Protestant who has never spoken to Mary and probably never will until I get to glory and meet her along with all the other saints.

The reverence that is supposed to be expressed towards saints (even Mary) by Catholics is called "doulia" not "latria." Look up the terms sometimes. Mary-"olatry" doubtless happens, but it's not the official Catholic doctrine.

I won't get sucked into that debate either. It would like a dog chasing its tail.
There's even been a couple of posts calling it blasphemy. I personally think the bigger blasphemy is assuming the Seat of Judgement. I wonder if any of those folks realize what the the name 'Satan' means.

Anyway, I am seeing the movie on Wednesday.

Thank you for your input. You've explained it very well.

Don't worry, the movie should be around for a while. And until you've seen it, you can participate in discussions here, it's not like the threads will be "spoilers" since we all know the story anyway!

Wrong. You need to reread Matthew 7. Since you didn't drop it....I had to come back.

You need to reread your bible too. Start with Matthew 7 for a response to your comment.

Here's the popcorn. From what Gibson said on another thread, you'll be too intent on the film to eat it!

As someone with no dog in this inter-Christian fight (I'm Jewish), I winced at the Catholic-bashing in the removed posts.

Any true Christian would not bash any faith that sees Jesus Christ as the son of God. My daughter converted to the Greek Orthodox faith, It is based on the gospel of Jesus Christ. Just another denomination.

This film should bring all faiths together, not divide us. If we believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, then we are all of one faith.

I think you addressed your post to the wrong person. Matthew 7 applies to your compatriot's posts rather than mine.

Just don't get too comfy in that chair.
