Hardball Transcript Hoffa Claims Kerry supports ANWR
Hardball MSNBC ^ | 2/17/04

MATTHEWS: How about ANWR? You guys want to see ANWR because you want to see guys working in your business. I guess there‘s a lot of Teamsters jobs up there lined up and organized, if you could put a pipeline up to the Alaska wilderness. He is against that.

HOFFA: Well, we talked about that.

He says, look, I am against ANWR, but I am going to put that pipeline in and we‘re going to drill like never before.

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: What, are they going to run water through it?

(CROSSTALK)

HOFFA: ... more jobs than the ANWR would have ever created.

MATTHEWS: What are they going to run through the pipeline?

HOFFA: And that‘s the position he‘s taking.

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: But he is against drilling up there. What are they going to run through the pipeline?

HOFFA: Well, they are going to drill all over, according to him. And he says, we‘re going to be drilling all over the United States. And he says that is going to create more jobs.

(CROSSTALK)

(LAUGHTER)

MATTHEWS: You got that guy rolling.

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: What position was he in when he made all these promises?

(CROSSTALK)

(LAUGHTER)

MATTHEWS: It just seems amazing that he has turned around on NAFTA, turned around on WTO, turned around on ANWR, anything to get the Teamsters.

HOFFA: Oh.

MATTHEWS: Who is going to be boss if he gets in there, you or him?

HOFFA: Well, I think that

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: It sounds like you are the boss.

------------------snip--------------------------- and a great comment by Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH: And people aren‘t going to give that up. You can sit and say they are. They are not. They‘re going to want the most choices at the cheapest prices.

I‘ve just got to say very briefly, though, I thought the Hoffa interview was hilarious, when John Kerry said, oh, yes, I voted for NAFTA, but I‘m against it. I‘m going to set up a panel and you‘re going to be on it, buddy.

(CROSSTALK)

SCARBOROUGH: And then saying, I‘m going to drill all over. We‘re going to drill oil, drill not only in Alaska. We‘re going to drill them all across the 50 states It‘s proving—again, I think it‘s going to be a recurring theme, that John Kerry is not going to be able to run away from his record fast enough.

Well, there goes Kerry's "Bush is an antienvironmentalist" argument!

I trust someone will pin down this snake on that and make Kerry admit, ON THE RECORD, whether he is for or against drilling in ANWR.

Either he loses the greenies or the unions. Either way, we win.

Go figure. I don't think Hoffa is lying.

Kerry is trying to play both sides on every issue. Just amazin'

If Ralphie Nader ever needed an excuse to run, this is it. Be sure to to email this transcript to him.

How much do you want to bet that no "mainstream" journalist asks Kerry the question?

Rush played the audio .. what was so funny was that all the media people in the background were laughing loud enough so you could hear them.

It shows Kerry will say ANYTHING to get elected.

A match made in ANWR:
The touching love story of the GOP and the Teamsters

by Arianna Huffington
03.07.02
It's a match made in heaven. Actually, not quite that far north -- in Alaska. With the Senate scheduled to begin debating the administration's energy bill this week -- including its plan to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the president is expending a great many kilowatts of his own energy to guarantee its passage. His partner in this oily scheme is none other than the Teamsters Union. Yes, the very same Teamsters who endorsed Al Gore and who, in the last election cycle, funneled 93 percent of their PAC donations to Democrats... In another show of devotion to their newly beloved, the Teamsters have put a distinctive spin on a time-honored romantic tradition. Instead of carving their initials on a tree, they've expressed their deep affection by carving their initials into the forehead of Sen. John Kerry with a vicious -- and wildly inaccurate -- newspaper ad... which proudly bears the Teamsters' union seal, claims that Kerry supports drilling off the coast of Florida. Which would be true -- if he did. But he doesn't and, in fact, he voted against it.
He voted against it, but he supports it now.
It also distorts his position on drilling in Alaska. Who needs chocolates, when you can buy your sweetie a full-page hatchet-job? "The truth is," Kerry told me, "investing in renewable energy sources will create a lot more jobs than drilling in ANWR. The Teamsters ought to be fighting for the jobs of the future, not the jobs of the past." But there is more to this dangerous Beltway liaison than meets the eye. It turns out that Hoffa's romantic agenda is the most suspect since Anna Nicole Smith fell head over heels for her octogenarian billionaire. The "jobs bill" rhetoric notwithstanding, Hoffa's real objective is the removal of the federal oversight of the Teamsters that was imposed in 1989 as a result of the long history of corruption within the union... But the very nature of Hoffa's support for Arctic drilling proves otherwise. "Clearly, we can explore ANWR without harming the environment," claimed Hoffa -- a statement that, along with the bunk he and his cronies are peddling about Kerry, shows that this is a man who is willing to do and say pretty much anything to curry favor, and cannot, therefore, be trusted. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is a lousy idea. At best, it will only produce enough oil to meet six months of America's energy needs -- and it will take ten years to do even that.

George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
