LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Scientists fixed a glitch that froze the robotic arm on the Mars rover Opportunity and then prepared the robot explorer to dig a narrow trench in the martian soil, NASA said Saturday.
Scientists hoped the patch of soil, dubbed "Hematite Slope," would prove to be rich in the iron-bearing mineral, which typically forms in water.
Opportunity's explorations had been delayed on Friday because the rover failed to properly stow its robotic arm. Engineers sent instructions to the rover that fixed the problem, mission manager Jim Erickson said Saturday.

I don't care how much it costs, space exploraation is the next frontier.
Go, NASA!
Let's invade the other planets, and STRIP-MINE them.

What, and disturb all those rocks? That's monstrous! I say we declare Mars a U.N. World Heritage site so that it can never be used for anything. Yeah, that's the way to go. Then we'll have to send missions to clean up all that space trash we've been lobbing over there. Must keep things pristine for future generations, after all.
Just kidding. Strip mining is definitely the way to go.

...except for old-growth rockpiles...whether they cause forest fires or "whatever"...or not. It's for the churldrun.

We'll strip-mine the other planets later. :)

It is unlikely that I will ever know of a manned mission to Mars. I'm very optimistic and hopeful concerning our space exploration efforts though and I cheer them on.
It is truly remarkable to me that we are only 100 years into manned flight and are already able to send men to the moon and robotic probes to Mars. I often wish that I could see the future,...but then, maybe not.

Considering the glitches they've overcome, and the whole magnitude of the project, it's all pretty damned amazing.

Can we start with France?
