SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding.
The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

The say that the killing fields at Flanders, France bloomed after WW1, with poppies, a million of them. (hope that I have the correct town in France).

The poppy seed is hard and needs to be "upset" to sprout, so they bloom in fields that have been worked or vibrated.

I have seen the California Poppy, suddenly bloom after a lot was graded.

January 2004 was unusually cold for most of the Northern Hemisphere (see previous TCS CharTiFact). The cold prompted the UK's Independent to link the weather in a recent op/ed to increased carbon dioxide in the air saying, "Global warming will plunge Britain into new ice age 'within decades'." I am writing in regard to the Klamath Basin water problem. Though it is believed there is no easy solution, I believe there is a way to meet the needs of all.

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia has launched a major military exercise.

The Saudi Defense Ministry said the exercise began on Saturday in northwestern region near the Israeli and Jordanian borders. The ministry said the exercise would last five days and include live ammunition fire.

The exercise was deemed as under the responsibility of the Northwestern Regional Command. A military statement said the exercise would include a series of maneuvers.

The military plans at least another exercise over the next few weeks. The Saudi ministry said the Royal Saudi Navy would launch a live fire exercise in the Red Sea in March.

A ricin-tainted letter mailed to the White House in October threatened to turn the nation's capitol "into a ghost town" if new trucking regulations were not repealed, according to the FBI, which has posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The White House letter, processed through a postal facility in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Oct. 17, was the second one intercepted that demanded an end to new regulations mandating more rest and orienting drivers toward a 24-hour work-and-rest cycle.
