Wesley Clark pledged Saturday to "get our balance right" by stemming illegal immigration while allowing immigrants to earn citizenship over time.

Appearing in this military community near the border with Mexico, the retired general said, "We are going to control our borders, going to work with the government of Mexico to stem what's going on down there because we have to."

"We've got a president in this country who really doesn't have a clue about where this country should be going" he said to loud cheers. "He redid his father's war against Saddam Hussein, he's redone Ronald Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthy and now he wants to redo John Kennedy's space program."

Psst...Hey, Wesley Crusher, all those things were SUCCESSES! Why should someone NOT continue them?

No matter, Mr. Crusher and the rest of the dwarves will quit in due course, except for whichever Southerner Liveshot Kerry picks for his running mate.

This is an excellent development! I don't trust his guy, but it is nice to see some real opposition to our immigration policy. I hope he gets some real traction out of taking a stand against illegal immigration.

Why does it require a closed mind for him to just do his job - say, by increasing the number of patrollers on our own borders to the number of men he has patrolling Bosnia's borders? Seems to me he's rather closed-minded not to.

Increasing the support overseas has a much larger effect on protecting our borders to would be disrupter's of our freedoms than lining our borders hand to hand with troops. Unless of course money is no object, then we could build a dome over our 48 with doors that are guarded to allow only the welcome.

Part of Dubya's job is maintaining a realistic mindset and being sensible also.

How many more patrollers could we get for $1 billion a year? 10,000-20,000? Even that would double or triple the number we have now. And $1bn (or ~$3 per American) is a drop in the bucket compared to what we're spending in the War on Terror.

And the money could easily come from the savings from pulling out of Bosnia, which is nothing but an unproductive drain on our resources.

Yes, however the war on terror has been effectively contained in the ME so far. (fingers crossed)Let alone the spur to the economy by tax cuts which were vital to maintain a decent market in these times of peril.

1 to 3 billion isn't a drop in the bucket to anyones standards and once the "illegals" find a way around the human barrier (which they would) how much would it cost then?

IMHO, the issue should be focused strategically around Fox, and we could spend much less money by diverting the cost to Mexico's economy by forcing Fox to bear most of the brunt of responsibility in our border issues.

Nothing's going to keep them out completely, but the more patrollers there are, the more illegals that will be caught, and more importantly, the more likely we'll catch someone who presents a risk to our security. And 3 dollars per person in the USA per year isn't really that huge of a price to pay for that.

Sure, there are a number of ways to raise that amount of money. I suggested Bosnia, but cutting aid to Mexico works for me as well.

Financial arm twisting, as a primary focus, really isn't what I was referring to, however it could be an integral part of the overall strategy if needed.

The problem is generated in Mexico and focusing on the generation of the problem instead of reacting to it, in a proactive fashion, before it becomes a US border issue is what I was trying to convey.

Will he give orders to BOMB the illegals from 15,000 ft. like he ordered NATO to do to the Serbs.... who were trying to stop ILLEGAL ALBANIANS from taking their country.

He can begin with Chicago. Following Mexico City, D.F. and Buenos Aires, Argentina, it has the largest number of Spanish-speaking residents, of whom a sizable proportion are illegal aliens.

The other question is this: will Dean also run third-party?

Wouldn't a Dean-Ralph Nader coalition be an interesting development....

Oh, I don't know... but something about killing a house full of innocent women & kids just to get one nutcase preacher, sorta bothers me.

Planned and authorized during the Bush I administration, BTW, with the request for military assistance from Ft. Hood coming from the office of then Texas governor Ann Richards.

My Husky just loves the cold weather, My Golden is nuts about the snow -- likes to burrow in it and I can't get him back when I let him out. He's hunting, hunting all the time, following rabbit and deer trails and who knows what.

My Weimaraner reacted to snow similarly. Icicles, however, she regarded as water bones.

Clinton didn't take office until 20 January, 1993. The Waco Branch Davidian investigation and raid planning began long before that, though interestingly, former Clinton bodyguard and Little Rock ATF Special Agent in Charge Bill Buford was very much involved in the investigation from its earliest stages.

Daqvid Koresh had tangled with the BATF before and had developed extensive background files on BATF activities, including the presence of BATF [then known as ATTU] agents at the Texas Schoolbook Depository in Dallas on 22 November 1963, and the use of BATF agents and informants relating to thefts of weapons from Arkansas fireartms dealers, with possible ties to weapons smuggling from the Mena Arkansas airport, neatly covered up by Arkansas US Attorney Asa Hutchinson. And we certainly have yet to see any Bush administration investigation into FBI or BATF misconduct and criminality at Waco, do we? inescapable conclusion is that the Bush family is as much in business with the Democrats- or some of them- as it is in competition.

The Soldiers--How Many, and Who?

A number of US military combat veterans were involved in planning the raid. Of these, we have a few names: William Buford, an Army Special Forces combat veteran, Jerry Petrilli, a Marine Corps combat veteran, and Kenny King, also a Marine Corps combat veteran Treasury Report, pg. 37).

As early as July, 1992 during the Republican Administration of George Bush, BATF agents were receiving secret training for the raid. "Dallas Morning News, March 1, 1993". The site of the training and the identity of the trainers is not revealed.

In mid-February, 1993, Special Forces personnel from Ft. Bragg in NC came to Ft. Hood Texas to train the BATF agents on the Military Operations Urban Training Facility (MOUT) at Ft. Hood (Treasury Report, pg. 73). (See the description of MOUT training in The Los Angeles Times, July 11, 1995).

Clark is a nut, but this is a very smart move.

//////////
Yep.

Clark plays this right -- and he wins. (And we all lose.)

(And GWB can thank the genius, Rove, for this one.)

I was one of the first people who, on Jesse's morning show on KSTP told him he should run for Governor. Suddenly, for a few days, it seemed like everyone was saying it. And then it died down for a bit. Then, I moved back to N.C. and imagine my suprise when I opened the paper to find that he actually did it. And won.

We're VERY grateful that you guys and gals gave up Jason Lewis and let him come down here to Charlotte.

Do you remember an incident on 494 where an 18-wheeler overturned it's load of BB's in the dead of winter? That was the day I was leaving. Amazing how bad traffic was that day. But, I escaped. :) I'd come back for the summers every year if I could. It's a beautiful state.
