DENVER - Twenty-three congressmen warned President Bush in a letter yesterday that he risks an election-year backlash from Republican voters if he continues to press his guest-worker proposal.

The Republican lawmakers said their congressional offices have received a flood of angry letters, e-mails and phone calls from Republican constituents vowing that they will refuse to vote for the president if his program is approved.

I think there is a current race among immigrants of all countries to see who can turn America into something else. Look how many "towns" countries reside in our states (e.g., Little Cuba, Chinatowns, Iraqi-neighborhoods, Iranian-neighborhoods, Russian-neighborhoods, etc.).

There use to be a time when immigrants came to America to be American. Now they only come here to live IN America. Thus we have so many hyphen names here. They want to continue to dress in their native dress. They want to continue to speak their own language instead of speaking English. Use to be parents, once immigrated to America & an becoming American, would not allow their children to speak anything but English. Not so anymore.

So, we should not be surprised if in a few generations, we are no longer called United States of America. Better prepare your children or grandchildren that one day they or their families will be immigrants in what was once their own country.

I don't really have a problem with allowing people the process and opportunity to become American citizens. I just want them to keep America's standards. Keep America, American.

Realistically, I think we need to face up to the likelihood that this thing was a done deal before they laid word one of it on us, and NWIH are they gonna have it NOT go through.

If some people around here were TRYING to drive conservative voters away from Bush, they couldn't be doing a better job of it. Lies, personal attacks, ridicule, pile ons, and in general just TRYING to make people angry, all the while claiming to be the voice of sanity.

And the more outrageous the lies and attacks, the better it works.

The left's only chance to overcome the Republican party is to infiltrate it, pull it left with "moderate, well reasoned positions", and divide it. Essentially, to make the fall come from within.

So this is the justification for allowing aliens and American businessmen to break immagration law, and then follow up by stating that it is a step in the right direction?

The argument is bogus on both counts.
There are Americans who can and will do this work, but aren't going to work for next to nothing, because they can't afford to! So bring in a poor alien and exploit him so that you can retain profit margins, and then say that you had no choice!
Meanwhile, our countrymen, who can't afford to work for such low wages have to sign up for federal aid to their families, along with the aliens who are coming here and wont go back because they don't have to, and they know that as long as they are here, they can get the government goodies too!

So tell me again how this Amnesty Plan is supposed to help America?

Oh and don't we know the dangers now, and the country is due to become even more destroyed by it and is being destroyed by it even as we speak. New and not necessarily good things are happening in this country right now. I think we all fully see it, a big share of us don't like it, and to make matters even worse - we don't know exactly what to do about it either.

I consider it my duty as a United States citizen get out there and vote for the candidate I feel is best. That might seem like a battered wife syndrome type of thing - but I assure you it is not. I am from Minnesota where our vote does not matter in the grand scheme of things. We simply do not have enough electoral votes in my state to tip things one way or the other. We can't do anything BUT make a statement with our vote and we're not likely to give that up too. So battered wife syndrome really doesn't apply in Minnesota. To give you an example, Minnesota has traditionally voted democrat (not to include me of course). In the last presidential election Minnesota voted republican. Now is that making a statement or what? I think so.

They have GOT to learn that they do not "own" our votes. They have GOT to learn that they must earn our votes.

I agree with you there, however - I am from Minnesota where we do not have enough electoral votes to tip things one way or the other. Minnesota is traditionally made up of democratic voters (not to include me of course), but the last presidential election, Minnesota voted republican. I was shocked! For Minnesota that was making a pretty big statement. I think Minnesota proved that it was possible for Minnesota votes to swing either way even if it wasn't going to count. With not enough electoral votes in my state - all we have left to offer is making a statement. I think our last statement was pretty pronounced for anyone caring to acknowledge it. I hope someone did. Here in Minnesota we don't feel bad knowing how little our vote counts. It's just a fact and we accept it.

So let's see.
Bush proposes an immigration bill that makes him popular with some minority immigrant communities, but then it dies in Congress.

For the so called conservatives who threaten not to support Bush in November, the issue is off the table long before the election.
But for those he impressed by the proposal, he still looks like the good guy.

It's a win-win situation.
Bush must be loving every minute of this.

I absolutely agree with your logic on healthcare and I do think it could be a solution - but only part of a solution. The drawbacks of course is all those people out there who cannot hold on to a dime for anything - some could but don't - some just can't - not enough money. That is where that plan would fall short. You and I are able to put the deductible aside in savings for that medical rainy day. We'd be taken care of and it makes perfect sense to me. As I'm talking about it here - I'm thinking it does sound a little like someone was planning another type of welfare system when developing HMO's (the dems?). I remember the days when we had the good ole 80/20 plans with a deductible and you didn't hear of any problems with our healthcare in this country then. But then I also remember not having the money at the time for that deductible or the 20 percent. I was just too poor at the time. Given a life-threatening situation, death would have been the only thing I could afford.

I'd also like to mention, I remember reading an article on how those 80/20 plans were making money and holding up the HMO's that were losing money hand over fist. We saw the bigger picture way back then and look at where it has been allowed to take us. What were we thinking?

Going back to these 80/20 plans with a deductible would only work for some of us. To be fair, we'd have to figure out something for the rest of the citizens who just can't do it. I like the sound of your plan. It's on the right track. Try to create what we had in the past. You know the days when we actually knew what a hospital room cost and could realistically face it?
