You make a good point, Delphinium. No one is claiming that Bush is the "perfect" conservative. Frankly, I don't expect perfection this side of heaven. All we're saying is that, on balance, GW Bush has done a good job on some issues, and on others he's been great -- and that, overall, his performance as listed on this post outweigh the one or two or three things the naysayers continue to harp on.

After all, we believe in and practice self-government, and therefore think for ourselves. What a terrific response. I agree!

Leftists are pretty proficient at "calling evil good, and good evil". Well-said. I stand corrected.

Hi Truthy, glad to see you on this thread. I've been busy at work all day and have only been able to check into the thread briefly from time to time. I'll have a lot of catching up to do tonight.
Someone earlier on this thread responded to me and said something about the Partial Birth Abortion Ban being just a "manual" for how to do them. Since I was on my way to work at the time, I couldn't respond. What I'd like to do is go out to thomas.gov or C-SPAN's site, and look up the actual text of the law. But I don't have the time now. When I locate it, I'll summarize the key parts and forward it to you.

withdrawing funds under $10,000, so as to NOT " trigger " a look into, has been in place for many decades now.
It sure has... I remember it well from working in a bank almost 20 years ago :-)

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Jim Baker went on his Forgiveness of Iraq Debt trip. I had forgotten about his part in the 2000 Election. He's a good man indeed.

Is a Mexican illegal alien better than an American born black teenager?
*****
Not a better person, but perhaps a better employee. Any black American teen-ager who wants to get to work on time and do a day's work could have the job in question. Or are you saying that an entry level American employee is automatically due higher wages than an immigrant?

The anti-Bush paleo Right really blew it when they made opposition to the war the centerpiece of their agenda. As they like to say about Bush...they ruined things with their base.

Jim Baker will always be close to the top of the my list -- always did like the man. I sure wouldn't want to play poker with him either. He is the hero of 2000 IMHO!
It's a shame the GOP never ran him for president. He could do it all. There was never a job he couldn't do. However high they piled it, he sailed through it.
Incredibly capable man. He's even more effective than Dick Cheney and that's saying something.

Right. The paleos harken back to the grand old days of the 1930s when Hitler wasn't considered much of a threat, and we should mind our own business. Of course, being engaged from a position of strength in a dangerous world IS our business.

No one beats that silver-tongued man.

Incredibly capable man. He's even more effective than Dick Cheney and that's saying something.I am a huge Cheney fan but would have to agree with your statement on Baker. I would have voted for Baker for President in a heartbeat. In fact, I didn't think the first President Bush was going to seek reelection in 1992 and hoped that Baker would step forward to run.
Then I wanted him to run in 1996. You are talking to a big Jim Baker fan here!

GWB's CONTRIBUTION TO BIG GOVERNMENT
HUNDREDS OF WAYS IN WHICH GEORGE W. BUSH HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE GROWTH OF GOVERNMENT
THIS LIST LAST UPDATED JANUARY 10, 2004
LV Editor's Note: I'm aware that many links on this page no longer work. The websites to which I link sometimes remove articles or go off-line. This list contains over 200 links and it's very time consuming to verify working links on a regular basis. I also have many more items to add. If a link doesn't work and you're curious about the item then I suggest searching for similar stories using your favorite search engine.
In his nomination acceptance speech in 2000 Bush said, "Big government is not the answer." It reminded me of when Ronald Reagan said that government is not the solution and then presided over a 67% increase in federal spending during his 8-year tenure. Republicans campaign like libertarians but govern like socialists. They increase government spending, drown business in new regulations, create and expand government programs, impose economic sanctions on other countries and meddle in their internal affairs, instigate wars, and curtail freedom. They're willing to pander to virtually any special interest group which throws money in their direction. They even enact gun-control. Republicans have no incentive to reduce government because they can always count on their rank-and-file supporters to vote party-line. If you want to reduce government and get it out of your life then you must stop supporting the people who are making government bigger. Supporting the "lesser of two evils" isn't going to reduce government.Since taking office George W. Bush has increased the national debt by $895.7 billion. [source]
George W. Bush has spent more time campaigning while in office than any of his predecessors. [source]
Bush has never vetoed a spending bill. [source]
With GOP Congress behind him, Bush has yet to use veto [source] — Aided by a Republican-controlled Congress, President Bush is on track to become the first chief executive since John Quincy Adams in the 1820s to complete a full term without vetoing one bill.
Do Republicans really support smaller government? Here are some interesting facts:
- Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress from 1995 through 2001 during which time the federal budget grew from $1.4 trillion to $2.1 trillion (about $100 billion annually). [source]
- Since Republicans took control of the House in 1995, federal discretionary spending has grown by a rate of about 7% annually. The number of earmarks lawmakers have put in the spending bills to steer federal funds to their districts has also grown. By one estimate, between fiscal years 2001 and 2002, they increased from about 6,300 to 8,300, or 32%. [source]
- Since the Republicans took over Congress in 1995, the budget has grown by 50%. [source]
- Even though we now have GOP control of the White House, the Senate and the House, the bloated $2.25 trillion federal government has grown more rapidly on President Bush's watch than it did under Clinton. [source]
- Social welfare programs under George W. Bush have grown by $96 billion in just two years, versus $51 billion under six years of Clinton, according to economist Stephen Moore of the Club for Growth. [source]
- Pork-barrel spending rose by 21.6% from 2001 to 2003 according to CAGW President Tom Schatz. [source]
- When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981 the federal budget was $680 billion. When he left office in 1989 the federal budget was $1.14 trillion -- an increase of 67%. [source]
- The last Republican presidents to preside over a decrease in federal spending were Warren G. Harding (who served from 1921 until his death in 1923) and Calvin Coolidge (who served from 1923 until 1929). During that time federal spending decreased 44% from $5 billion to $2.85 billion. However, spending began increasing again in 1928 before Calvin Coolidge left office. [source]
