CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

I have a friend who is getting a large Muensterlander dog. Its a fairly rare breed and not AKC, but beautiful, it looks like an English Spaniel.

You can rationalize all you want but it doesn't change the fact that buying puppymill puppies keeps puppymills in business and turning out more puppies creating more mysery.

Better that the breed rescue folks get it,

Are you now saying they *were* rescue? Honestly, it's very difficult to keep up with just what you *do* mean.

Rescue groups do *not* buy pupppies from petstores furthering the breeding and mysery of those animals. At least no respectable rescue organization will do that. Not unless they are aware that the price of the puppy has been reduced to the point the store/puppymill has *lost* money. Reputable rescue organizations do *not* support puppymills. They realize that some puppies may be sacrificed but that's a difficult choice preferred over supporting the puppymill cycle and contributing to its growth causing more mysery and death. There's a lot more at steak than the puppies you see. There are all the dogs behind the scene living in horrible conditions that most folks cannot imagine. You can get an idea by going here and click on "PuppyMill video" (warning... this is a difficult video to watch). There's a lot of good info on that site about puppymills.

No, I wouldn't define one as crappy

You did in your post. As a matter of fact, more than one.

Dude, learn to freaking read, I said that folks from the club would buy the dogs, spay/neuter it, and then it would go to the rescue groups where they would place it. Its not that hard to understand english. You infered that the rescue groups made the purchase. I decry puppy mills and am vehemently against them, but you evidently didn't understand that either. Just because your cottonheaded thinking repels logic is no reason for you to blither on and make more of a fool of yourself.

Now, I am gonna teach my dog algebra, since it will be much easier than trying to communicate with you.

From an angel to a devil to an angel, in a five minute span. But that's not news to you, I'm sure. I understand why you miss your trio.

Thank you for your service to America. And for the sacrifices by you and your family during your service. Stay safe, come home soon. Cutie, Petie, and Butch await you… mystery-ak, too:-).

You are in our prayers.

Thank you very much for the prayers, and the kind words. Just doing what I signed up to do. I have pictures of my little trio plastered all over my office here.

Give you little Pug girl a kiss for me.

Our little female, Cutie is an all black Pug, she is a sweetheart.

Bodee's momma Alley is all black. She takes after her daddy, Gator, in the looks department, and after Alley in the sweetheart department.

We got her from a really nice young couple living on base at Gunter AFB (that's what I still call it, although I think it's part of Maxwell now). Florida Gator fans (faint). We're Auburn fans and named her Bo (Bo Jackson for offense) Dee (for defense).

I'll give her a goodnight kiss for you each night.

JRTs are from another planet. However the same training rules apply and will work.

True.

I love the pictures of your JRT. Don't you love that breed? They are the best.

Thank you, although they would be more representative if they showed a tiny blur tearing after a squirrel. JRT's are the greatest dogs in the world.

We have have had 7 of them in the last 14 years. We have 2 new puppies now.

Congratulations on your furbabies! One is all I can handle, but that's enough.

Don't you just love the way they tilt their heads....they are strictly lap-dogs..and want constant attention...I only let one sleep with me, but the other two would if I let them. They travel in a pack..I refer to them as a pack of pugs.

They were very easy to train, did you have problems?

Good Morning mystery-ak,

I love the tilt and the expressive eyes. Cute as a button. Patti keeps saying how sweet she is, and she's right. I think Bodee had trouble training me:-).

Seriously, she's a fast learner. And is a people lover - if she hears a neighbor, she wants to go give 'em some sugar. Her favorite friend is Pork Chop, a neighbor's Eskimo Spitz (I think). They would wrestle all day if we let them. Very social with a capital S.

We brought her home July 23rd. That night, we had a new bed buddy. I understand why you let only one sleep with you. Pugs are small, but can really stretch out.

Hope you and your pack of pugs have a lovely day.

I have had huskies for years and many times when I go out to feed them they will immediately drop on their backs and have me pet their bellies. I guess they think me the Alpha male. They live in my back yard and do not use their dogs houses, unless it rains. In fact, when it gets cold they always sleep in the snow. My dogs may bark mean, but they are far from dangerous.

I have had German Spepherds in the past, who I would consider as much more dangerous. Of course, the scariest dog I have dealt with was a 175-200 lb Malamute. The damn thing was one step from a wolf with an attitude of a pitbull. I am sure it could waste just about any pit bull and any unarmed person.

I generally keep the Jack on a high shelf for security reasons, but he found the airline bottles that were under the desk and forgotten. This was the morning after Hurricane Isabel – when I discovered The Boogie doesn’t think much of Hurricanes.

"I've never met a chow I couldn't trust. Their owners can be a different story."

Then how about you come down and catch the black chow that runs lose in my neighborhood growling at anything/anyone that comes within 20 ft? lol (animal control refuses to come get him! they claim they've tried to catch him for years which I don't understand because this dog does NOT run.)

I'm with you 100%. We've got 2 chows that run loose in our neighborhood. They've got a fondness for trouble and killing chickens. Well, one of the chows got himself shot (oh, the poor little doggie). The dog made it home, owner took it to the vet and it lived. Cost the owner dearly, as in over $500. Around where I live, dogs that like to kill other peoples' animals generally get themselves shot. I like it best when the dog lives and the owner is stuck with a large vet bill.

I really really dislike people who let their dogs roam onto other people's property and destroy/kill things. They really shouldn't be surprised if the dog doesn't come back or comes back injured.
