Thanks for the ping. I heard Krugman on NPR this morning. Since he is unable to harp on the market and job losses he has resorted to comparing the current economy with that which led to the Great Depression. And then of course there are these Hitler comparisons. But I think it would do us all some good to remember Times Square minutes before midnight on New Years Eve...750,000+ roaring Proud to be an American. Even CNN had nothing to say but, "what a night, what a city, what a country."
Fox showed both moveon ads today. Disgusting. I'm listening to Clark on Hardball right now. Also disgusting. Unfortunately, I don't think we've seen anything yet!
Hi PKM, I need you remove me from the ping list again.
"Now, maybe he did state this to get the Russians on board with him but in order for the Russians to believe he was sincere, he would have had to back this up with socialistic economic practices."
He only had to get elected once (well, in fact he had "only" 44% of the votes and instead was made chancelor by the president). He kept the promise of giving everyone work (mainly due to the construction of infrastructure he needed for the war; but that's as socialist as when the US pumps money into war machinery).
The national socialist- and the communist party hated each other. They fought on the streets and stormed the meetings of the other party (that was the job of the SA), leaving hundreds of dead behind.
My use of "appease" was wrong, I'm sorry, English isn't my native tongue. What the Nazis did try was to get the votes of the workers who weren't affiliated with the communists. Sorry about me being so unprecise.
Of course there were many orders given by the government to the industry: The building of streets, the building of factories to produce tanks, weapons, airplanes etc. But as I said, that's as socialist as the US "controlling" Lockheed Martin...
"If an owner disagreed or openly fought against the government dictate they were dispatched."
True. But you that's something specific to a form of government (dictatorship), not specific to a form of economy .
Hitler being categorized a right winger - now we're moving to the "National" in National Socialism. The National wasn't a lie at all. The Nazis stand for Nationalism as no other. The "race" was everything, woman were supposed to stay home and give birth to children, crimes were severly punished. And above all stood the Nation: The most important thing there was the Nation ("Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" ["Germany, Germany above everything"] was the first line of the German anthem until 1945).
These aren't leftist ideas. They belong to the far right. There are elements you find resembled in conservative ideas, however, nationalism is far more extreme ("further to the right") and there are ideas that have nothing to do with being conservative - the real religion of many Nazis was paganism, their gods were the old germanic Thor et al.
blackdog:
"I don't answer my children as a rule. Answering them is of no use to anyone. It's quite exciting when they develop different takes on stuff."
But if they don't know what socialism is, then how can they develop any take at all of it? I mean, you need to know as much about something as possible in order to know if it's good or bad, don't you?

BTW, NAZIS were collectivsit, socialists. Has any of these morons studied poli-sci or read the platform of the NAZI party?
Or is it that they can definitely identify
Hitler as someone to hate (rather than Stalin) and they hate President Bush equally.
Equal opportunity hatred, that is what the radical Left is all about.
It works for me. :):)
Ah, now I get it. I completely agree with you on that.
